I have a 30 gallon hex tank and I am considering getting an 18" retrofit kit such as this one (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3779&Ne=40000&R=7423&ref=3055&subref=AQ&N=2004+113030) even though it will overhang the edges a bit and not light every section of the tank. I could put tall, thin caves or driftwood in the back and plants in the center section of the tank with low-light plants at the front of the tank. Do you think this would work? The widest section of the top of the tank is 20" and the edges of that are about 18". I am still researching for cheaper places to buy a ballast like this, and I haven't decided which bulbs to use yet.
*Edit*
Either that or I am also considering this 14" super nova 32 light (http://www.aquarium-supply.biz/ordering/lighting_CS_SuperNova.html) because two of them could fit over my tank without hanging off the ends. The current ballast on that tank is 15".
