Hi Friends !

I have these 3 External Filter Questions. Will be a great help if you friends can kindly guide me here -

1. Is it possible to have a single intake End to feed water to 2 External Eheim 2217s ? I mean can I split the Intake hose using a 't' joint or something and make it feed water to 2 filters ? Will it work or will it be harmful to the filters.

2. Is there any External Filter Model available that does not work on gravity to bring the water in to the filter. I'm asking this because I'm in a situation where I have to keep an external filter on the same level / above the tank level, so gravity filters wont work. Kindly guide me.

3. Can I use a Pond Filter to filter an Aquarium ? I know this sounds foolish, but I have a window near my tank and I thought I can run the intake all the way thru the room (hidden) and out of the window to the pond filter. Kindly guide me if its possible.

Sorry if my questions are all dumb and foolish - just wanted to clarify.

Thanks a lot !

Hi Friends,

Actually I dont have a Pond nor a Pond filter. I'm in a situation where I have to use a Filter but I dont have any space around the tank. I thought I'll get a Pond filter, as it will not depend on gravity and keep the filter out of the Room (hoses thru the window) as I dont have space.

Basically my situation is a little foolish / weird and I know not many will agree with me here. I already have 2 Eheim 2217s and an Eheim Internal Filter running on this tank (its a 4 feet - 50 Gallon tank) but I want to increase the filtration further, as this is a Frontosa tank. I know I should not keep the fronts in such a small tank but this is all I can have and I love fronts. I dont have more space to upgrade to a bigger tank...

The 2217s are already good at Bio-Filtration, as they are filled with Eheim Substrat Pro (about 5 Liters) and Ehfi Mech Ceramic Rings. I thought I'll add a Pond Filter to this tank purely for Mechanical filtration...

Kindly advice...

Yes but you will need to double the size of the pipe to the 't' joint, the filters would work better if you had two seperate intakes.

Not that i know of, but you could DIY one with a pump in the tank pumping water to the filter.

Yes, but the longer the pipes are the more the flow will be reduced.

Hi there !

Thanks a lot for the kind reply and for caring. Can such a thing really be made ? Will be a great help if you can kindly guide me a little or give me an idea to work on.

May be I can build a huge one (using a large water tank placed outside the room ) so that My Tank's Volume also increases ? I really have no experience / knowledge about the Pumps so will be very grateful if you can kindly guide me a little on it.

Is it possible that I use a pump to push the water to the Large Tank and a similar pump to take the water back to the aquarium ? I guess this will help me increase my tanks volume too ?

Please guide and help me...

...purely for Mechanical filtration...

It sounds like you have room, or not. I'm not sure.lol

IF, you have room behind the tank? Approximately 5".

One of these would do some real good mechanical filtration.

You can use #14 & 22 as a mechanical/chemical filter.
Or
#20 for a real fine partical mechanical filter.

Thanks a lot for the kind reply and for caring. Thst really looks great - I dont have space behind my Aquarium, but I can mount it on the side, I guess. The sad part is that we dont et those here in India :(

Here's a good link to a DIY canister filter. http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=154096
Instead of having the pump on the filter get a submersible pump to put in your tank and let gravity return the water back to your tank from your filter.

You could even run a sump type filter above your tank.

Hi there !

Thanks again for caring and for the kindness. I guess I cant keep the Sump Filter above the Tank also - because I have Electrical Outlets above the tank and anything above that would be too high (almost reaching the ceiling)

Is there any possibility that I can have a sump like filter outside the room (hoses running thru the window nearby ? ) I guess I will then need 2 Pumps, one for taking the water out and the other for bringing it back ? Kindly advice if this will be practical. Also kindly advice on what type of Pump should I buy ( a picture from the internet will be very helpful ) as I've not worked with pumps a lot and we dont get good aquarium stuff commonly here in india...

Kindly advice...
Thanks and Regards

Not sure about the details but if most canister filters are sealed so they do not leak then the pump should create a vacuum that will suck the water to the canister from the tank.

The thing i have noticed is that most pumps have a very limited head hight (how far up from the pump they can push/suck water). This will most likely be the limiting factor with having the filter tank very far from the tank be it above, below or outside. If you have a pump on both ends (from and to the tank) you are taking a chance that when one stops working the other will pump all the water somewhere it is not wanted all at once. That is why one pump and a overflow (sump/wet dry) or one pump and a suction tube (sealed canister) are used when the pump quits all water transfer quits with it.

The sump outside the window should work as long as the pump can push water far enough to get back to the tank. But watch the water temperature.

What ever you do make sure when the pumps are turned off there are no siphons that can drain tanks that are not suposed to be drained.
