Sitting with a 20g at home with nothing in it. I wanted to put just 1 fish in there. What's the biggest single fish you can keep in a 20g?

If you intend to plant the tank, I would go with a paradise fish. My black boy is about 5 inches right now, and a glorious fish. Not suitable for mixing with other top/midwater fish, as they are aggressive, territorial buggers, but mine is in with a bunch of bottom dwellers with no conflict.
There are blue, red and black color variations. The black is gorgeous--steel-gun blue, with marvelous red and blue tips.
Where can you find good pictures of these guys? They sound great but I have not yet seen them in fish stores near me.

Does no justice to the coloration of this fish!

Better, but still washed out, and fuzzy. Maybe this weekend I will spend some time with the camera and see if I can get a good pic of Angus.
Wow, even the blurry picture makes him look like a nice fish. He has that same determined look my bettas does.

Think of a betta, then multiply the attitide by ten. This fish will flare and attack the glass when the cats sit in front of the tank. Even a person standing in front of the tank gets 'warned'--he flares his fins so the overall shape is a long rectangle, and curls around to wave his tail. The dorsal fin goes up about 1 inch, and the tail squares off, and the tail fills the area between the dorsal and anal fins. He changes color as well, getting very dark. Between him and my puffers, I have 2 tanks that are not friendly to upper and mid-water fish. ;)
I had to remove some lyretail mollies from the tank--he was brutal.
Hey Wippit Guud, sorry about the thread hijack. But that is a great fish.
My betta is mister softey and likes hanging out beside me when I watch television. He enjoys company.
As for a single fish for a 20 gallon high. Perhaps a single convct would be okay? They can get very attractive and are easy to come by. I don't know if they need to be kept in pairs or not. But I have heard they can go in a 20 as long as there are no other fish.

Darn, I want a paradise fish. Shame I've already fallen in love with my bettas. Plus the whole dorm issue. ~Sigh~, Being old will be fun. I will have four fish tanks and a couple of parrots and everyone will call me 'eccentric' instead of crazy (because I intend to be rich and that is what you call crazy rich people).
But getting back to the topic, maybe an angel? Or some other kind of cichlid possibly.
I think that pirahnas need to be kept in schools.

Ok, from what I know already...
Piranha will get the width of the tank easily, and they're very skittish. Dunno if an angel would have enough room.
Yes, I plan on it being heavily planted. Wanna try to do one of those showcase tanks with a 'lawn' for the substrate :)
Paradise fish get that big? That might be the way to go... mind you, it means I'm let without a tank for the betta, cause those two will go at it.... 30g will have tiger barbs, 10g has a crayfish... poor betta gets left out of everything (he's currently in the 30 with 4 cories until my lfs gets some firemouths, wanna stock those before I add tigers)
Yes convicts like to be kept in pairs...but try not to have hiding places otherwise they will just hide unless it is feed time....have the tank planted with convicts.
