Anyone help me with a safe effective mosquito repellent to use indoors and outdoors which wont affect my tanks? I am having problems since a small lake was constructed nearby. Tiger mozzies by day and regular mozzies in the evening.Thanks. btw I already did a midnight raid last month and put 50 mosquito fish in the lake, but with scarse results..

I wore one of those blue- fan thingys you clip on your belt and forgot to turn it off about a week and a half ago. Came inside and was standing next to my air pump talking for a good 10 minutes before I realised I had left the fan on.

Did a pwc (didn't know if needed) and no one was hurt or harmed- but it made me panic for a moment. I'm sure repellents are not a good idea around the tank in general- but I wonder if citronella might be acceptable.

It wasn't random... it has mosquito repellant in there... duh! You've been staring at those lights for too long Ace.

I would imagine you would have needed to stand there for atleast a few hours before there would be enough saturation in the air for gas exchange to occur and have any effect on the water.

I thought so too- but wanted to be safe!

Important piece of info to leave out.. I have several "blue fans" and the only thing in them is AA batteries.. never even heard of one that had repellant in them.. then again, I don't live in muggy mosquito infested areas either.. I live in the land of the "nuts and flakes". ;)

You need to get one of those bug zapper thingys. They not only work well, they are really entertaining. Oh, and put more fish in the lake. :)

And most of them are under the dome in Sacramento but came from the flake farms of SF and LA areas. :D :D :D :help:

What's your goal? Are you trying to keep mosquitos out of your house, or out of an outside area? Is your tank inside or outside? If inside, just put screens on windows and doors (which I'm sure you thought of yourself). If outside, there are propane powered mosquito traps that are supposed to be very effective. They burn propane to give off moist warm CO2 (like animals exhale) which attracts mosquitos and then it traps and kills them with a vacuume cleaner or water trap. They are rather expensive, but there may be some do it yourself projects on the internet that you can try. Here's a link (http://www.consumersearch.com/mosquito-traps) to a review of some commercial ones:

Chamomile, citronella and lavender all repel mosquitoes.

Most are ok, but try to keep any smoking repellents and aerosols to a minimum in the vicinity of the tank, especially if you have a protein skimmer and/or open-topped tank. I live in mosquito heaven--not as bad as the everglades, but we get desanguinated animals every year.

I like turtles too! I laughed so hard I spit coffee on my computer screen. And I know the mosquito's in Ace's neck of the woods are HUGE in the summer.
