Dragon Lord

Do you think Angels will be a good tank mate for Congo tetras???

What size tank do you have? and how many congos (any other fish?)?

That will determine what sort of tank mates you can keep.

Well I have a 75 gal with live plants....The tank is actually cycling now...Green caorys and red tetras(buenos Aries...I think. I know they are not serpae tetras)
Once tank is cycled
Angels
Black neons
Congoe tetras
Octs
Panda Corys

What do you think????

Thanks

The only thing I would look for in that setup is whether or not any of those guys are nippy. The angels with those big fins might get picked apart if they are.

I think a large school of congos would make a great display. You could keep a pair of Kribs and/or Nudiceps with them...and a few upside-down catfish(Synodontis nigriventris), synodontis angelicus, or synodontis alberti. This would make a nice West African regional or biotope type aquarium.

So the congos would nip at the Angels?????

In research I am finding that people say they are good tanks mates for discus...I know they would nip at the discus

Anybody got any websites with more info on Congos and their behavior???

One site even said congos were good with angels and discus but mentioned nothing about them being nippers

WOuld rainbows be better tank mates????

I need to read info on both the congos and rainbows

I don't really know much about congos, just that they look nice. Some tetras are really bad nippers, like the Serpae are, but I can't say for sure the congos are. You would want to keep a bigger tetra with angels as the Angels are good at eating tiny fish like neons.

Well Losing neons to the angels is no prob. I am a firm believer in the more live the food, the better looking the fish...

What do you think about adding the angels first...letting them adapt to the tank..and then adding the congos as juvies(not too small to be eaten by the angels)

Would this help establish the Angels and prone the congos from nipping????

I am pretty sure that nipping fish don't care as long as they feel safe in groups. Of course I am still not that sure about how nippy congos are. The angels are probably not going to be that big when you get them so I don't know how they do establishing themselves.

Congos tend to be on the tougher end of the tetra scale.

They will fin nip when give the chance.

They would go nicely with some of the other tougher tetras like:
Black Skirts
Serpaes
Diamond tetras
Columbia tetras

They would also work with some of the more doscile barb species.
Cherry barbs
rosey barbs
arulius barbs
Spanner / t-bar barbs

I wouldn't personally put them with anything that has long flowing type finnage, or with anything that tends to be on the weaker or nastier end of the spectrum. IE:
Angels
gouramis either too doscile (Moonlights)or too tough (Opaline, kissing)
Discus (they just stress too easy, losing a $50 discus to a $2 tetra is just not worth it IMO)
Neons
cardinals

I tend to err on the side of caution though.

I have 4 congos in a 55 gallon w/ other fish including an angel. They like chasing and harassing each other, but no fin nipping on the angel that I can see. YMMV.
