View Full Version : Ebu Jagers issues, more than one type?

I was in a small town LFS and they had a 250 W Ebu Jager for half price, so I asked why half off? The guy told it was beacuse he was clearancing them out and he wouldn't accept returns. He said he has gotten many of the ones he sold back because they got water "in" them. He showed me one and sure enough there was water in the bottom of it. But, it looked a little different than mine. ALL of mine have a little blue knobby ring around the top of the heater where you set the temp. This guys Ebus did not. I asked at my local LFS that does not carry Ebus and they reported the same issues and they stopped carrying them. But, they said it was with the "green" ebus? What?
IS this a common problem with EBU's?
Are there more than one type of Ebu's and I have just gotten lucky buying the good one?
All my heaters are dry and work flawlessly. In fact, its the only heater I would buy from my experience.

I've been using them for 20 years without any problems at all. Must have been a bad batch.

I had read that the green ones were flawless and the ones with the blue ring were not nearly as good. Pop over to simplydiscus and read there, the breeders go through a ton of heaters with discus tanks at high temps.
I'd snap up a green one if they have them on sale.
I have yet to see a green one... What is the difference? Every one of them I saw so far are blue with little round thing at the top...

I own quite a few of the blue ones, and they're pretty darn good....
That doesn't mean, I suppose, that there couldn't have been a bad batch and your LFS got some of them, but the blue ones in general aren't flawed.

Thanks for the advice, but, I went to a larger pet store near where I work and they reported the same issues with Ebu's especially the green ones?!?!. In fact they only carry two sizes because someone requested them. They recommend VISI-therm, which is the only decent non-EBU heater I have ever owned, and it stuck on for me after two years. But, all of my EBU's are working great so its still the only heater I will buy. They are just forcing me to save 50% and buy them on-line:)
The starting price was $40.99 at that small town LFS!! So, still not really an awesome deal at $20.50. Also, it still looked different than mine. It was mostly black and did not have the bright blue ring on the top. IS this a third style? or broken?
Besides, I have more heaters than tanks at this point anyways. I just wanted to know if I should be watching for leaky heaters or a particular type of Ebu I should watch out for.
