So I have been planning my next tank and I'm completely torn, I'm going to get a 20 gallon long tank (eventually, this is all theoretical and quite a ways off into the future) and I can't decide between having:
#1. planted, with a single oranda. (possibly a small school of white clouds? or would that be too much of a bioload?)
#2. lightly planted, with a couple of Dojo Loaches and a small school of bloodfin tetras.

What do you guys think??

Personally I would go with blood fin tetras... im a tetra person...

I just feel that the 20l would be to small for the goldfish... but then again im not a goldy expert...

just my two sense :)

20 gallons is small for goldfish. An oranda, and most other goldfish will reach 6-8 inches. I'd go with some dojo loaches and tetras.

The 20 gallons per fish rule works only in tanks with multiple fish. One goldie in a 20 gallon is fated to live a miserable and lonely existence. I'd say go with the tetras till you have the ability to devote 55 - 75 gallons minimum to a goldie setup.

goldfish drag in high amonia but tetras are not bad so go with the tetras which are good because you can add all different types of tetras which would make the tank colorful.

I vote for #1 minus the goldfish. A nice planted 20L with some tetras will look very nice

:iagree:

If you want two goldfish, you might want a 55g which is more spacious.

Thanks guys, I had a feeling 20 gallons might be too small but I wanted to check with you guys(who know from experience) rather than the random info sites which say otherwise.
Sadly anything much bigger than a 20 gallon is ....well.. I don't have much room and my family already gave me a dirty look when I brought up the 20 gallon, I don't think they could handle a 55 XD
But in a couple years when I move out... :P

soo that leaves me with #2.
A lot of you guys suggested just tetras? But I'm already doing that with my 10 gallon.. 20 G isn't too small for the Dojos is it? Cuz I think their absolutely adorable.

How many Dojos would you guys recommend? with the added company of say...5 or 6 bloodfin tetras? I definitely don't wanna overstock..

The dojos grow to a plump 8 inch size so a 20g won't work either. Kuhlis will be your better alternatives. Along with kuhlis, tetras that grow no more than 2 inches are the only ones acceptable. Bloodfins can reach 3 inches and take up a lot of space.
