Looking for info on where to get non-asian freshwater clams. All the ones I see for sale are the invasive Asian clams that live only 1-3 yrs, and also have a parasitic larval stage. would like to have some cool filter feeders in my tank b/c I can't have shrimp or they will be lunch!

anyone know what species there are and where to find/buy them?

non-parasitic fw mussels would not be bad, either.

I suppose you could check NANFA or Ebay.

The commonly sold "Asian golden clam" doesn't have a parasitic larval stage.. just an old myth.

have you gone hunting for some? we have clams in the rivers near here

Now those are the ones with the parasitic larval stage. Get a net and catch some wild guppies - there's a really good chance you'll see some larvae on them. They look like little black dots you could scratch off with your fingernail, about the size of a pinhead.

oh. i didn't know that. i used to play with them when i was a kid that's all.

Me too! We tried to eat one once but it was nasty.

Back on topic, how big is the tank where you want the clams? Those guys don't usually do very well in home aquariums because it's really hard to give them enough food. They have a better chance in a big tank but they'd probably be goners soon in a smaller tank.
