Parrotfish,Flowerhorns....And guess what abomonation I discored eaRLIER this week?
A friggin' convict/JD, at an LFS that I thought was a reputable store!!

To marketers nowadays,Its all about $$$!
I know this topic has been dicussed before,
but who are these people to play god?
I am aware that some cichlids of different families mate, but if you don't cull the fry you're only contributing to the problem.

In all honesty, when I had my Oscar and GT in the same tank they seemed as if they preparng to mate. And if they had and the eggs actually devoloped into fry, they'd have been used as fish food!

That is also why I intend on purchasing
a wild-caught male GT from Jeff Rapps. I feel that it is my/our duty to freshen up the gene pools, and stop the devolopment of these 'fish'before there's no pure species left....

yeah yeah. i agree with you but you're not going to stop it. i work at a lfs when i'm not at school and we only really carry parrots. people want them. mostly women because they are cute. you're never going to stop the production of hybrids. you can not buy them in a silent protest and that might do some good, but probably not much in the long run. i don't like them, so i don't support this section of the hobby. i tell people that want the fish that they're hybrids, but people don't really care. that's just the way it is.

That's why it's called retail, It's the same anywhere you go. On the Networks they run shows that are panned by the critics and sometimes get low ratings. Some end up being great shows. Seinfeld was almost cancelled after it's first couple runs. Fortunately NBC stuck with the show. Other times great shows that get a lower rating than deserved are nuked immediately. It's all about the benjamins, baby.

BTW...i agree with everyone here. it's not going to stop...It's not going to change. Some like them, some don't. As for freshening the gene pool...raising one GT and getting the progeny out into the hobby is the equivalent to dropping a nickle in the Christian Children's Fund. you helped...but it's not going to buy a lot of rice. Good for you for doing something you believe.

trying coming over to Malaysia and i can show you around our LFSs, i'm sure you'll be shocked by the lack of any other fish except for Flowerhorns.

i mean, there are plenty of cichlids i've never seen in real life except on the internet and pictures from you people.

speaking of this topic, ive seen two other examples(maybe only one...im not sure) recently. i saw a goldfish labeled "lionfish" or "lionhead"?? anyway, it didnt have a dorsal fin. looked really strange. are these for real? the other was called a "parrot fish". they came in a rainbow of different colors and didnt have a tail fin at all. kinda like that one site thats been brought up here about those freakish big cichlid fish that didnt have tails, but these looked different from those. they were pretty disturbing actually. but they all sold and im sure they will again.

Ok, sorry for bringing up a topic that has already been tirelessly debated. You are all correct in the fact that it's going to happen no matter what.

I know it wouldn't have even hardly made a dent in the GT's gene pool. I feel that im an active hobbyist, and wanted to do something, anything, that I could to help fish in general. If it is just one person,no, it will affect nothing.

This topic has been debated to countless degrees and I now feel dumb for bringing it up YET AGAIN!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!!!

we all make mistakes, like whomever it was that got the parrot into the fish trade.

Blood Parrot is probalby a creation by mistake. I don't think the people who created them intend to produce a fish with deformed mouth, but rather to produce a fish with intense red. But the intense red comes stuck with deformed mouth, and so they called them parrot. The newer Parrot breed called King Kong Parrot has no deformed mouth and looks just like a short Red Devel. Except for the intense red, some of the new Parrot look so much like a regular RD that I can't tell apart.

Fancy goldfish has the most extreme deformity of all kind. There are bubble eyes, celestral eyes, pearl scale, crooked back Ryunku, extra growth Lionhead, tumor like facial tissue and so on. Some are so deformed that they can't swim straight or ballance themselves.

Look I'm definately not promoting tireless arguing, but I must say that one person can make all the difference. It's when we think we can make no difference alone, that nothing gets done. Great people were often made great by being the first to do something they believed strongly in.....and the world has been changed by many of them. If you believe in something, and know it's not hurting someone else (or SOMETHING else)....DO IT. Believe you CAN make a difference, or that you will go down trying!

OK enough of my pep talk.

the lionhead refers to the stuff on their head that resembles some growth, looks like some external brain.

the goldfish without dorsal fins are not hybrids, they're called Ranchu. they're mutated, but not hybrids. they one you saw would most appropriately be named Lionhead Ranchu. it kinda resembles the Oranda but with no dorsal, curved back, smaller tail and shorter body.
