So I have had African cichlids for a while now. I have about 15 adults and 11 babies. i know i have one female but as for the rest I have no idea. When I first got into it everyone told me you can tell by the marks on the bottom fin. Then I heard you can tell by if the bottom fin is pointy or round. Now is there any real way to tell because my female has egg spots and I know shes a female because she has spawned 11 babies. I mean I look at some of these fish and have no egg spots what so ever but they chase others around like males do. So does anyone have a sure fire way to tell???

What kind of african cichlid is it? If it's dimorphic (different colored males and females) you can tell visually, usually when they reach 2.5" and over, if they're monomorphic (same colored males and females) the only sure way would be to vent them, telling them apart by eggspots is not reliable as both sexes can have them.

P.S. both males and females can be aggressive towards their own and opposite sexes.

lets see I have 2 zebra red fins, a Chipokae, 2 Acei that are each others shadows, 3 electric yellows, a marmalade, a red top cobalt, 2 red zebras, 2 islands, and 3 venustus

Venting google the term and you find a wealth of info..

o0 = female
oo = male
