View Full Version : Wysteria Slowdown

Every since my Aquasoil became exhausted, the Wysteria has become almost dormant, barely growing at all. By contrast, my Rotala Macandra and Parrot's Feather are still doing well, as is the Java Fern. Have gradually increased fertilizer dosing amounts to compensate for the lack of soil nutrients, and also struggled with a green water problem which began shortly after the soil ran out. Tried to overcome it by slowly shifting the nutritional balance and reducing photoperiod, but finally purchased a Green Killing Machine, which works quite nicely. During the worst of the green water, the older Wysteria leaves turned somewhat black and appeared wilted, although new growth appears bright green, however slowly it appears. Is there something else I can do to help my Wysteria? It used to just grow like a weed. Thanks.

Dunno- if it is a matter of soil have you tried Root tabs perhaps? I've got mine in sand with just a root tab- it's OK... it Might help you.
When I first got my Wisteria- it spent the first 3 weeks dying off... thought it was a goner... the next 3 weeks growing rampantly faster than anything else in the tank and now is growing but growing relatively slowly - still looks nice and healthy though.
(I have more plants in there now that might be absorbing the nutrients before the wisteria can)- can't say why exactly why it dies... then booms... then gets by.
Wisteria seems to be rather temperamental! ;)

What exactly are you dosing?
Root tabs might not have much effect on wisteria, which does not have as extensive of a root system as other plants. But you can try.
But I agree with Wycco, mine never grows very fast at first, then it shoots up.

id try the root tabs. i dunno where you guys get the idea it doesnt grow much for roots. granted, i have fluorite. mine grows insane tangles of roots. also, have you tried fluorish? you can also float it. it doesnt grow as neatly that way, but it will grow.

I am not sure how much it will benefit from root tabs..tho it probably wouldn't hurt.
it's my understanding that it grows floating because it feeds from the water column.

I have been using root tabs w/iron for several months. Regular dosing is N,P,K, Flourish, Flourish Excel, Iron, and DIY CO2. Although the tops are hardly growing at all, there are some healthy looking new branches several inches long at the very bottom. My next idea is to trim the weak looking upper portions way back so as to allow more light and growth down low where the plant looks healthiest.
