Anyone know what the heck these things are?

LOL, looks like a colonoscopy. Yuck, I grossed myself out. I would have to say some type of invert but like everybody else no idea on positive id. Neat though.

Some mass of worms. Could be tubifex worms or some relative of theirs, as they love those kind of environments.

Doesn't look real to me. The last one shown you can see in the upper right corner of the "blob" something that looks like a marionette string connected to it.

Almost looks like a colony of worms. But how would they move as if they were one being? Maybe somewhat of a chain reaction, one moves, the others freak out and move with it.
I don't think it's fake.
Definitely cool though, I want to take it out and put it in a 10 gallon, see what happens

Well, I showed this to one of my Profs on Facebook whose specialty is medical microbiology and parasitology. He has no idea what it is. He showed it to another Prof, his friend, who also didn't know. He thinks its real, he just doesn't know what it is.

Normally these occur in soil and sediment, especially at the bottom and edges of polluted streams. In the photo they have apparently entered a pipeline somehow, and in the absence of soil they are coiling around each other. The contractions you see are the result of a single worm contracting and then stimulating all the others to do the same almost simultaneously, so it looks like a single big muscle contracting. Interesting video."

There have been conflicting reports and the 'experts' disagree on what the objects are. I've heard anything from Tubifex to Bryozoans and am leaning towards Bryozoans, myself...but I'm no expert. ;)

i don't believe the tubfex worm either if you look at the thing, there is a mucus over it that is part if it, and reacts with the movement of the carmeras,.. and one of the last pic you see a white needle looking thing retrack into the mass,.. look very good and you will see it is something all in one,.. not a mass of individual worms,..

Tubifex worms...the first mass is dark like blackworms. I feed live blackworms to my fish and they exhibit the same "contracting" behavior when one moves in the mass. They also lump up together in the corner of the container to get to the surface of the water.

Yeah, I did some googling, and there's some news articles out there but no clear consensus on what this is, which makes me wonder if it's real.
I mean, you know, send some science guy down there with some rubber gloves and tell him to touch it, right? :evil_lol: That should clear up pretty quickly the question of whether it's a ball of worms.
