adding a new Angel?

I recently lost my 4 year old HUGE gold male angel to a mysterious blockage/bloating :( I still have a very large female around the same age and I'm wondering what is my best course of action...

Should I get another Angel?

Is she likely to fight with it? The pair did mate several times but I did not raise any fry.

Do I need to find a large Angel or is it ok to add a smaller one?

Any tips would be appreciated. The girl did seem to be searching the tank quite a bit after he died... but she is ok now. She looks like she might be getting ready to lay eggs again - so sad :cry:

Also: I would like to possibly add some other fish to the tank but I have no idea what to add? Any suggestions? or should I leave it as is??
 
If you are going to add another Angel, it should be as close to her size as possible, otherwise, being a cichlid, she may display typical cichlid behavior.... or if you try a smaller fish, be sure to have another tank in case they don't seem to work out.

What size tank do you have? Is there anything else in the tank at all besides her?
 
all the details of my tank are in my 'tank setup' but it's a 44 gallon. There are a few other fish - 5 buenos aires tetras, 5 cherry barbs, a rainbow shark, a rubbernose pleco, and 2 cories (need/want to get more).

This particular angel seems to be pretty calm in general but I realize that could have been due to having a suitable mate...

a benefit from taking on a larger Angel is the guarantee of knowing what sex you would be getting and as you already know, if there isan incompatability, there could be issues... Personally, I would probably go with trying to find an adult Angel for the tank or stick with everything else you have in the tank and add to the cories and that's it. The Angels aren't really the type of fish that need a group of them to feel comfortable. I'll bet she looks quite pretty surrounded by the blend you have in there, huh.
 
If you do find a male it can not be smaller than her she will more than likely beat up on a smaller male.

given your tank size I would add like 3 quarter size to the tank she should accept them with out to much fuss. where with just one it would be hit or miss.
