I have an aquaclear filter for my 20 gallon and I am going to be buying one today for my 55 gallon. I was wondering if I have to buy their carbon packs or if I can buy the media bags and lose carbon. Does that work for the aquaclear filters? If so which size bag do I buy? How often do I need to replace the bags. Also how often do I have to replace the sponges? Do they really need to be replaced every 2 weeks or is it one of those things where you can really use them until they start to fall apart.
Thanks!

When you buy a new AC filter it comes complete with the media. You can buy each item separate (That's one of many reasons I like them). I run 2 sponges and replace them about once a year. I simply rinse and reuse. I add some felt pad just because I am over-stocked. You can also use poly-fill(which I sometimes do when out of felt).

For a 55 I recommend an AC70. The carbon they give you is a very generous amount and I would keep it sealed and unused if you don't normally use it. That way you will have it onhand if ever needed.

All packages are labeled by filter size.

Thats what I do too, 2 sponges with biomax between or just 2 sponges. Floss if particulates are a problem, carbon only if needed. I use both an AC 70 & a 50 on a 55g but I like extra filtration & my fish like current. I've never replaced the sponges & would only do it if they were falling apart.

I got a aquaclear 110 and a aquaclear 300 on my aquarium. The 300 is before they changed the numbers its the same as the Aquaclear 70. I dont change out my sponge havent since I bought it mine has yet to start falling apart and does the job that is needed. I do have bio-max in the 110 and only a sponge in the 70 I dont run carbon anymore.

So yeah they dont need to be replaced every two weeks IMO.
