Most of the pictures that I have seen online of JDs show them are kinda greyish with more colors showing through. Mine are very much like that, but they are very, very, black with the shiny dots. Is this normal?

Probably very stressted out..

Nah, they have been like that the entire time I have had them, and I have an excellent tank. They still have the bright red on their fins and the shiny dots on their sides, so they are not hiding their colors because they are stressed, it is just that their base coloration is different.

I had a very dark male JD years ago that was one of the best looking ones I'd ever seen. There's nothing wrong, your fish is just darker than usual.

That's good. I have three of them right now. I think two of them are males and one is a female, although I don't really know how to tell for sure. They are beautiful fish though.

If you post some pics up we can help you. JD's are pretty easy to sex.

How big does a JD need to be in order to be sexed??? Im finding it hard to sex mine but there still small. I believe ive identified one deff male and female but the others I cant tell.

You can start to sex them when they're about 2-3 inches long. But the bigger they are the easier they are to sex.
