Is it safe to remove the glass strip on the aquarium hood and still use a strip light there? It's all messed up (bought the tank used) and calcified and algaefied. I'd rather just remove it if it's safe and get more light in the tank.

If your water level isn't too high and no water will splash on to the lights then yes. Otherwise you might end up ruining some bulbs.

The glass strip is always going to get calcified even a new one after just a few months. The key is to wipe it down with WDV once in a while to remove and manage the calcification which will make it look better and still provide plenty of light from your fixture. To remove the glass safety pane is to risk dropping your fixture into the water and placing yours and the fishes lives in the hands of the house circuit breaker which may or may not cut the power before your hart stops. Electrical safety is no joke. If you do decide to remove the glass safety pane remember if you see a guest slumped over your aquarium with the light fixture in the water, don't touch them, cut the power first or get a long wooded broom stick called a dead man stick to remove the victim, or you will most likely end up next to them on the floor.

However if you are not talking about the glass aquarium covers, which I assumed, but rather some sort of glass cover that is attached to the fixture itself I can only tell you that none of my fixtures have built in glass shields on the fixture itself, moot because it would do no good if the fixture fell in the water. The key here is that there is something covering the aquarium beside the fixture i.e glass canopy to prevent the fixture from falling in the water.

Just buy a bottle of CLR or something similar to remove the minberal deposits from the glass. Removing the glass will allow moisture to corrode the light fixture.
