As alot of you may know, I got 10 long fin gbr's here a week or so ago (Thanks again Elly!).. well I found a guy on aquabid that's selling these as well.. so I'm going to order up another 10 from there and try to get pairs from each strain together.. this will kind of be a "breeding project" the thing is, I'm certainly not planning to keep 10 pairs haha perhaps i will try to keep 3.. we'll see.

I'm just wondering how many people might be interested in purchasing a pair one they pair up..

I'm thinking when all is said and done I'll need to have about $20 a pair figuring in time, food, and cost of course! =)

Thinking it'll be around a month, maybe sooner.. I have 4-5 that are really coloring up nice..

I'll post some pics tonight after work =)

No one? Well that's good to know =) Here's those pics tho.. this is when I first got 'em so they aren't very colorful yet.. this is the first batch btw.. the new ones should be here next week =)
This is day #1 hardly any color at all!

These are starting to look better =)

It's been pretty awesome watching them change colors almost daily, I look in the tank and they already look different than these last ones =)

On another note, it was brought to my attention that $20 seemed like alot for a pair of long fin GBR's and maybe they're right, that's why I was gauging interest! =)

For a sexed pair that price may be high, but for proven pairs they go for $40 at a minimum. I've seen them many times at that price and sold them as well at that price. If you are looking for a pair and don't want to spend a lot of money you should purchase a group of 6-8 with half of each sex and wait until you get a pair. Most likely you will get all of them to pair up and you can sell the rest and end up with a free pair for yourself or even make some money on it.

Keep in mind that you get what you pay for too. A LFS near me sells Asian bred blue rams for $12.99 each so a "pair" would be $26+. What many people don't know is that the Asians are nearly always sterile from the growth hormones that they are treated with. Also keep in mind that long finned pairs can command a higher price than regular finned rams. The $40/proven pair was based on regular finned pairs. Long finned would most likely go for $50+ per proven pair. That may seem like a lot of money to you but if they are proven then you have a good chance of getting viable offspring. Rams that I sell go for $6-8 each and average spawn sizes are 90+. So that $50 pair can make $500 plus in no time.

I'd love to get some, but I don't have any intention of breeding them, so it'd probably make more sense to wait until you have some of their offspring for sale (especially since I don't have the cash for 'em yet anyways).

bump for some great fish!

bump for some great fish!Well, who knows.. the ones I have are pretty young.. not sexable (to me at least) maybe I will end up with some oddball extras! I've heard that you can't have more than a pair.. like trios or anything like that because the same-sex of the pair will kill it off, so if I have any that don't pair up those will go real cheap =)

Those are definitely sexable right now. I see both males and females (mostly females) in the pictures right now.

I have picked out 3 definite males from the group and I have 3 definite females.. I can tell by their pink bellies, but beyond that I wouldn't put money on the other 4 yet =) and now when I get these other 6 (changed from 10 due to lack of interest) we'll see what they turn into! heh

If you send me pics or post pics of them I could sex most of them for you. I saw one in there that was definitely a month or so away from having the coloration, but other than that most look like they are mature enough.

I have had quite a few folks interested.. if you can send me a pm I will have a better chance remembering who was interested when it comes time, I am sure it will take at least a week or 2 for the new guys to mix in with these guys so i'm thinking a cpl weeks yet for sure.. and I really want to make sure that these guys have "picked" their own partner and not just throwing a male and a female in together.. I want happy fish for everyone who's interested, I really got blessed in getting these guys to start with, I want to be able to be a blessing to someone else interested =)

I am actually thinking with this batch I have right now I am pretty female heavy.. there are 3 obvious males but I think there are 5 obvious females so unless the 2 late bloomers happen to be boys.. I will have some girly oddballs haha we'll see what the new shipment brings tomorrow! =)

Temptress

Got the new rams today! YAY! Pokey post office haha

They are acclimating right now.. on looking at them through the bags I think I ended up with 5 males and 2 females (they sent an extra!) which is great because I actually think I had more females in the other batch!

I won't know for a cpl hours how they compare in size to mine to know when they'd be ready for pairing up and all that but MAN do they have some long beautiful fins! I can't wait for them to get comfy and I can show you guys some more pics! =) I will keep all of you posted that are interested in getting a pair when they are ready =)

I have to tell you.. this is so much fun! watching these guys "flirt" and whatnot haha I just totally blew a good part of my evening with my face plastered to the glass haha

I am trying to figure out the best way to do this, so suggestions are welcome..

My tank is heavily planted.. and there is tons of woodwork.. and the wood is all ziptied together.. i am not sure how to even catch the pair once they've decided on each other.. there are 2 in there right now that did a little dance spinning circles and now they just stay right next to each other.. they are definitely boy and girl, but what's the best way to get them out without separating them? haha

I have a 29g in the garage that might be best to set up barebottom with no plants for this time in their life.. I'm just not sure if that's a good idea either. Well anyway, any help you guys can offer would be appreciated =) thanks!

And for those of you that are interested in a pair.. looks like it might be happening sooner than I thought.. keep your fingers crossed! =)

If you get a chance, get some video! I'm sure we'd all enjoy seeing that.

Temptress
07-13-2009, 1:26 PM
Well, I feel comfortable in saying that I definitely have 2 pairs of rams at this point, I did move all but 1 pair into a 29g barebottom with a cpl pieces of driftwood and a few potted plants so I shouldn't have any troubles catching them haha anyway, back to the fish

These 2 pairs in particular have set up on opposite sides of the tank and chase anything that gets close.. it's great, they will even chase 2 different fish and then race back to their corner and "fan" each other it's like a "high five" in the fish world to me haha

My thoughts in the beginning would be that I would have all these pairs just timed perfectly and I could box 'em up and ship them out on the same day.. well that's not happening and as it stands right now, these 4 got this tank on lock down so I think I need to get them into new homes as they pair up.. I've already pm'd the first 2 folks that sent me a pm so hopefully they will reply very soon so I can either ship out.. or move on to the next person in line =)

I have ordered a male electric blue ram and so I decided to only keep one pair of the long fins.. boy was that a big decision haha anyway, that leaves 7 pairs up.. to the best of my sexing ability I think I have an even amount of males and females.. we'll see tho =)

I have someone who will take one of my males if I can't find a trade.I will keep you in mind for sure =) Keep in mind these are the long fin variety I am not sure that you would want to breed them with your regular? I would maybe suggest selling your 2 males and just getting a pair.. but if I have a female left I would be happy to sell you one, if that's what you wanted to do =)

Just wanted to bump this up real quick.. I have 1 pair that I'd like to ship out today with this other package and the "next" 3 people on the list haven't replied yet and I don't dare "offer" any more than 3 guaranteed pairs right now so I'm just gonna do this to be fair

First pm and payment (paypal) in the next hour will get this pair shipped today.. any other orders I won't feel comfortable shipping out until monday of next week.. unless they lived close enough to guarantee it would make it before the weekend =)

That's $20 + $15 priority shipping guess I should mention that =)

6 more days than i am back in CA i have a friend who has been looking for a pair of rams i got some news for him maybe he will want some

Temptress
07-16-2009, 2:30 PM
Thus far I have had 6 pairs pair off.. 5 of those are sold, I have 1 up for grabs right now and that leaves 4 more fish to do what they will at this time =)

And something quite exciting.. and sad happened yesterday.. the pair I picked out to keep for myself spawned! it was so awesome.. I have never had anything but snails lay eggs so this was sooo cool, I got some pics! here they are:
99554
99555
99556
And right after I got these shots, she started eating them.. and didn't stop til every egg was gone :eek3: very sad.. but I read that they will do this to the first cpl spawns so I wasn't as shocked as I could have been.. the awesome part about this, is I actually didn't think these guys were ready for spawning yet at all! So I guess they are :thm:

jamesstill84

Gosh Angi, I am so sorry the mama ate her babies, know it was a disappointment. I expect my pair tomorrow Friday and I can hardly wait.

Temptress
07-16-2009, 9:07 PM
Ya, definitely sad but like I said, it was to be expected. Much to my surprise when I woke today from my nap I found one of the "other" pairs had spawned as well!
99602
And, to follow suit, right after I took these pics I ran up to grab a snack and came back down.. to find them all gone *sigh* I guess in this situation it was a good thing, because if you'll notice, that's the filter intake they laid eggs on haha so I don't think that would have been good at any rate!

So as it stands, all the pairs that have paired up are bought and paid for, I have 4 pairs being shipped out on monday, I still have 5 rams left so we'll see what happens when the tank settles down, right now it's a very aggressive tank with 4 pairs in a 29g lots of chasing! I will keep this thread updated until they are all gone =)

Just wanted to post that I'm sold out of these guys for right now.. at least til my pair stop eating their eggs and let some hatch! haha Thanks to those of you who made purchases and to those who I didn't have enough fish to go around to.. I hope I have some to offer soon =)

can i ask ,what your water parameters are for these great fish!!
ph,kh, temp,co2 and water changes?
thnx!

Temptress
07-21-2009, 6:39 AM
Well, right now mine are NOT ideal, as I'm really just learning about these guys, I will be buying a RO/DI system next paycheck and work on getting my TDS and PH down, but at the current time my ph is 7.4 (in this tank.. it's 8.2 from my tap) my KH is around 10 (this is the problem area for breeding I know) temp is 80 co2 is pressurized the tank is heavily planted and wc's are weekly, without fail, only doing about 25% on this tank because I don't want any major ph swings, but it's 50% on my other tanks

07-21-2009, 5:57 PM
thnx for the info.ive had rams before, but they didnt do very well.i dont think my water was ready at those times.now i believe im ready. ph 6.8, 30% water changes weekly,co2 injection, temp is 80 degrees with a fully planted tank.still have to get kh kit and a few others, but im very confident that they will do well.i have four angels and 12 tetras and cories in a 55g tank.hoping to get a pair from you in the future
they look so awesome!!!!i also know that keeping them in same parameters they came from can be very beneficial.thnx.

I am so glad you are happy with them, they really are a beautiful fish.. I seen some "adult" GBR's at the LFS yesterday and I can't believe how much bigger these guys are going to get still haha they make these look TINY! It's going to be great watching them grow =)

jamesstill84
07-22-2009, 6:35 PM
I agree. I had one in the past, but he was pretty beat up from the shipping to the LFS and he didn't survive longer than 2 days. These 2 will be the first time I've had them since then.

Yes! I finally got to see mine last night and they weren't even remotely shy. They came straight to the front of the tank like "HELLO!". LOL. They were eating snail jello & flake food like no other! Absolutely beautiful fish!

Temptress
07-23-2009, 1:45 PM
Yup, they ate snail jello here too lol but their favorites were the frozen goodies, bloodworms and brine shrimp! wait'll you see them go for that haha I'm glad you guys are liking your fish.. they're amazing!

Speaking of amazing.. I just got home from work and my electric blue rams have spawned! And they aren't even eating them! haha I wish I have the soft water they need.. right now they are an orangy color but I imagine they weren't fertilized anyway.. but it's good to know they're doing the dang thang lol
