A friend is trying to give me this fish. I have no idea what that is, and how to deal with it. Please, ID it and is it ok to be in a tank of 4-5 in African Cichlids. It's huge, about 12 in and weighed (might be a pound or so).
Thanks

Appears to be a low grade Flowerhorn. They can be very aggressive and territorial.
The coloring appears to be that of a flowerhorn, but the lack of a giant hump oni ts head at 12inches makes me think otherwise. Perhaps it is a hybrid with somethign else? A Jack Dempsey or something similar?
Either way, its most likely got a very nasty disposition, and would prolly scare the hell out of your smaller fish, if it doesnt eat them. It would be a risky move for sure.

Thank you, guys.
I thought it was a flowerhorn also, but the color is just so bad without any marking, and no hump so it could have been a SA of some kind.
The guy just put the fish in a bag and placed it in my 90 gallon tank when I was at work. The size looks so scary compare to my other fish.
I probably am gonna bring it to a LFS.

Low grade = no hump and little color from what I've been told.

Yeah Low Grade Flowerhorn that or a stressed flowerhorn who wasnt fed enough to get a hump but low grade is more likely.

Thank you all. He's doing a lot better today. He ate a whole shrimp for lunch.
Showing a little bit of color here. I don't know what to do with him, but probably got to buy a new tank for him. In the mean time he stays in a 20 gallon quarantine tank fully equipped.
I have everything needed for a new setup without the tank.
Any suggestion for the size?
Is 40 gallon big enough for him?
Thanks for all your inputs.

Not possitive on a flowerhorns full adult length im guessing bout 12-14" I may be off though which would mean it needs a 75gal+ with bigger always being better.

I wouldn't go with a tank smaller than a 75 gallon for that fish.

I just bought him a 65 gallon tank ... all for himself.
I will do some clean up tomorrow, put everything together, and he'll have himself a nice home. I will post more pictures of him after all done.
Thanks for your help.

P/S: I love to get him a larger tank but that's the only one I could find on Craigslist as of now. I don't plan to put anything else in there with him anyways.

A standard 65 is only three feet long...ideally you want a 4 foot tank with the same width (18"), which would be a 75 gallon.

I am happy to give him away, but I felt a loss somehow.
After I put him in the 65 gallon tank, I did not feel very comfortable about it (kinda small for him to swim around). So I put it on Craigslist, and posted a memo at work, trying to get him a new and hopefully better home. (I received hundreds of inquiries).
Finally, a guy I know from work wanted it.
It is now in a 135 gallon tank with some tank mates. He is 1000 times happier now.
A part of me says: I WANT HIM BACK ...
Thank you all for your help.

His color changes a little brighter and shows many markings that were not there before. He is not bad looking fish after all.

Now I got stuck with an empty tank and an earful from my wife.
She believed I purposefully trying to get 1 more tank in the house which has too many already.
She kept on mocking me sarcastically: "what are you gonna get now to put in the tank? It can't stay empty for long, can it?"
I hafta put up with the *****ing for a little while, then yoo hoo ... I am gonna get me some FISH ... :D
What is it gonna be? Anybody knows? I am open for any suggestion !
A very happy aquarium guy
