sorry, i couldn't resist. :D

just for the record tho, you can stick bio-wheels on any canister with a little modification, if even. i seriously doubt that with the area for biological colonization provided with other filters you would need the added attatchments tho. as far as handling the biological media in a fluval when cleaning, you don't. you just remove the trays and set them aside, that's the extent of the handling.

as a suggestion for the magnum........ fill it as full as you can get it.... no primer? you could try shaking it a little (running), it might help dislodge anything that remains. have you gotten the hoses primed? you could try submerging them like a siphon hose kind of thing, get all the air out and then attach them to the filter somehow. my fluval also seems to prime better if the outlet is TOTALLY submerged, they recommend leaving it at the waters surface and this just doesn't work. it creates like some sort of a vapor lock, maybe yours is doing something similar?

good luck

I figured it out. I got the hoses all mombo jumboed in there so it was hard for the air to escape, but eventually got it to work. Right now its on a 10 gallon tank with some goldfish. Im doing this to cycle the bio-wheels to later put on my 55 gallon which i can set up on christmas. Is this still ok for cycling?

yeah, sure...... if i take you right, it sounds like it would work.

you don't "need" the goldfish tho, you'd actually be better doing like a fishless cycle. you could even do that with a bucket and a heater.

it depends on what you're doing, i suppose. if you're adding it to an established tank just to collect some bacteria, that will get you started. you will have to stock sort of slowly and/or keep an eye on your readings for a bit. if your trying to pre-cycle the filter with a new tank and fish, it's sort of a waste tho. you would have been much better off just setting it on an empty tank, raising the heat and adding ammonia.
