I am trying to breed betas. the male shows off to the female by pushing out his gills but the female looks away. Is that normal and what are signs for when they are about to mate? thanks.

I highly suggest that you go to google and search on breeding bettas.
My other question is have you done any research on breeding them?
If you haven't, I suggest you do it before putting the female in with the male.
If you don't know the little body signals that the female gives them male (or the lack of her giving them), then your female is likely to end up dead or severly hurt.

i have done research and the betas are seperate. thr female is in a baby protector, a plastic box with slits down the side.

Okay. Here's a site which gives all the details of what to look for and how to tell if the female is ready to breed. I think it's the one I first used to breed my first pair.

Hope this clears some things up,
Good luck, hope you have babies soon :D

just curious as to where you will be housing the possible hundreds of betTa fry you could end up with...do you have a drip filtration/shelving thing going or what?
Also, betTas can be awfully hard to get rid of once you breed them due to their availablity. Where are they going?
