why would i do that, i dont want to go to germany or italy, i just want toast :(
Well, when the German's crossed it they made the French into toast. ;) Seems a rather easy way to make the French toast.
Sillyness aside- isn't French toast simply fried bread that has been soaked in eggs? Doesn't seem too difficult?
I know some people sweeten it with powdered sugar or add cinamon... is that what you're after- flavourings for it?

depends its made different everywhere.
couple eggs, dash of vanilla, 1/4 cup milk (half and half if you like it rich...mmmm) wisk it good dip the bread, dont soak it, a good bread is most important, you will have to find what you like. Hot grill or pan till its golden brown. little butter on top with hot syrup.
now I want some.
ps only real maple syrup from Vermont will do!!! of course I may be biased, but its the only real way to have them. lol
O did I mention Vermont makes 1/3 of the total worlds maple syrup, not bad for our size!

When looking for a recipe online instead of just googling try allrecipe.com.
They've got thousands of recipes online- I usually go for one that has a high- star rating and lots of comments... and I read through the comments- people give their experience with the recipe and often have some excellent suggestions.
If dozens of people have followed the recipe and liked it then it can't be all bad.

My family makes it about like snoopy's recipe, but with about 1/4 cup granulated sugar and a tiny pinch of nutmeg in the mix. If you like it firmer you can stick the bread in a toaster before you dip it and fry it.

Heheh, try looking up vegetarian recipes on there. The highest rated stuff I wouldn't want to make my dog eat even as punishment.

Snoopy makes it the same way that I do. The ingredients are the important thing. The amounts of each, customize to your taste. Hey prolude, were both a little biased in that department, with me being in N.E. WI. We both have to agree though that homemade syrup from any northern state tops anything that you can buy in the stores.:thm:

Which is probably good because dogs are not vegetarian. ;)
Seriously though, I've not tried making vegetarian dishes from allrecipe.com but I've had nothing but success with recipes I've tried from them. I only use the ones that have 4 or 5 star ratings and a lot of user reviews/comments... If a dish has 1 comment and 1 5-star rating I don't give it much credence though- because it's easy to get one person to like a dish.
I do read the comments too though- often if there is a problem with the dish- how to solve it is listed there and pops up multiple times from multiplpe people.

The best bread to use is a nice crusty old style bread; slice it to the desired thickness and dip it in a mixture of egg, milk, a dash of nutmeg and vanilla. Fry in a greased pan, browning both sides.......The good bread is key......

Cam- don't worry about not knowing how to make French Toast. I can cook just about anything fairly well ( at least according to the tasters :)) and I cannot make French Toast to save my life. It's become a family joke. Maybe good F.T. is not as easy as it sounds... or I'm just incredibly "toast challenged."

I just beat a few eggs and add a little vanilla and cinnamon. I like to use the thick Texas style bread and fry on both sides.

For sure, Cam. If you can make French Toast, you definitely have something on me! I'm with you. The best recipes come from forums like this one.

i recommend checking recipezaar.com as well and searching by rating. the comments and reviews make it easier to pick which recipes you'll favor.
before going vegetarian, my basic french toast recipe was one egg, about a 1/4 cup of milk and a dash of vanilla per 2 slices of bread, grill like pancakes until they get golden and brown on the edges and then sprinkle with icing sugar before dumping syrup on top. nothing fancy, and pretty eggy, but that's how my family always did it.

And it is NY maple syrup that you need
Am I the only one that thinks maple syrup is stinky and disgusting? The mere smell of it nauseates me! The world's worst most unforgaviable sin is putting maple syrup on the holy meat... BACON!
There again- I personally prefer a more savoury french toast/breakfast than a sweet one anyway... "sweet" and breakfast have never really meshed for me. I have a major sweet-tooth just not for breakfast.
but if we're doing sweet french toast- powdered sugar, and cinnamon sounds great to me... I like the suggestion of nutmeg too.

I use custard recipes.
but basically eggs, milk, sugar(optional) , Vanilla, cinnamon.
how long to soak depends on a few factors including how soft center you want the center of your toast.

My dad raised me to be a french toast purist..if I want sweet, I'll make pancakes or cinnamon rolls, none of those sickly spices go on my egg-fried bread! We scramble a couple eggs with some milk, dip the bread (that chewy sourdough type works great for this), fry in some real butter til golden-brown, then eat with butter, salt and pepper on top :D. Deee-lish! And has the added advantage of being portable sans plate.

thanks a lot guys, we didn't have vanilla so i just whisked eggs and milk, dipped the bread, then cooked and coated with powdered sugar. ill have to try all of these, but i think tomorrow ill be making some kinda toast bacon and egg sandwich, any condiment ideas besides maple syrup. i like maple syrup but not on eggs or bacon, and my friend used to put it on hashbrowns :swear:
and yes, i do know that aunt j and miss butterworth isnt maple syrup, just a sap flavored sugar solution, so dont give me no sass bout tat

How about a twist? A cup of pancake mix, 2 eggs and one cup of milk(then add more to get a wattery batter). Heat up a deep fryer or one inch deep oil in a pan. Then fry till golden on each side. Serve however you want, salt, pepper, butter, syrup, beer, cheeze, tandori sauce. But its best with peanut butter.
There are way too many ways to make French toast for me to believe that you don't know how to make it, haha. To change the level of style, change the bread. Crappy white bread works fine, but if you wanna kick it up a notch and make it gourmet, use a croissant or a nice french baguette.
If you want to vary the flavor, change everything else. Always use the basic egg coating, dont use milk and they will be firmer and hold up to cutting better without flattening. Instead of syrup all the time, try something else. Melt some jelly/jam/preserves in a coffee cup in the microwave then pour that on top for some nice fruit and an awesome pop. Dust with some confectioners sugar for a nice presentation, and if you use syrup, put the cinnamon on the bread, not in to mixture of eggs. It will brown better, hold its flavor better, and makes the toast way prettier.
