Hi guys, its me again, mr. annoying newbie still figuring things out with another question.

I have a Weipro TC-3000 sponge filter that has been running for about 2 months. Within the last couple days its started to really hum loudly. I can feel it when i put my hand on the tank and hear it across the room.

I took it all apart and cleaned the impeller and magnet and all that, but it really wasnt gunked up at all. No change.

Time to get a new one before this one gives up the ghost or is there something I dont know?

i have never heard of that make before this. it sounds like the motor unit on the powerhead is malfunctioning. i would replace it if the noise is a problem. ebay has good deals on powerheads usually.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, don't know the answer.

No not vibrating against anything as far as I can tell, ive taken it out and apart and nothing seems odd.

I was looking at some different power heads, but wondering if it really would help anything to be a power filter instead of just a water mover.

I couldnt find anything on this brand either, other than foreign sales sites and BRIEF specs.

I will probably replace this thing, as the fish cant like all that noise under there. (do fish have ears?)

if you have a power filter running on the tank right now, that's all you need for bio filtration usually. powerhead's are useful though for water movement. 4-6 times turnover is good. for example, you have a 30 gallon tank, so you would want a powerhead turning out 120-180 gph. voila!

Its a 120 gallon and I am running an Eheim 2028 (i think 260 gph) right now and this power filter with one of the 4 sponge cavities filled with 3 bioballs instead of a sponge.

So that would be somewhere in the range of 450-650 gph. I will probably try and find a filter instead of just a head, movement is movement but any extra filtering cant hurt... right?

In this instance with the eheim, I guess it wouldnt really matter, its just a little extra.

The Eheim is probably running at about half the 260gph but because of the over size it can handle the tank itself as long as you are cleanig the media in relation to the stock.

Once I was cleaning the impeller and snapped the toothpick thingy,a $2. part but the filter was down until the next day..Another time I wanted to clean the hoses and could not get the them off and used a pair of plyers and snapped the plastic connectors.$25 part and the filter was down for a week till I got the part.Always have a backup filter(and heater), even a sponge filter can keep the tank stable as long as it is large enough.
