View Full Version : Why is Big Al's so popular?

I see it mentioned here all of the time. Never heard of it otherwise. I went ot their site and didn't find it to be extraordinary. Are they primarily a Canadian distributor?

Also, whatever happened to MOPS (Mail Order Petshop)? Last I heard they closed up shop in the US but remained active in Canada. I called that 1-800-FON-PETS number at least 100 times to place orders back in the 80's.

These days I typically use Dr. Foster & Smith since they have good prices (especially sales) and ship quickly using FedEx (which also delivers on Saturday as opposed to UPS).

big als is the cheapest, cheaper than anyone and i think they will beat any price. i live in the southwest to it takes like 2 weeks for shipping thats the only bad thing. never treid fostersmith but i brought from thatfishplace.com before that was a pretty good one.

I have not purchased from Big Als, but surfing there site drives me nuts. I used Drsfoster&Smith for my canister filter and was so impressed I used them for other items. Petsmarts online store has great prices as well.

I'm not far from Big Al's' headquarters where they supposedly ship from and it seems to take them 1 week...

...If I order from Drs. Foster & Smith, it only takes them about 2-3 days to reach me. Which one do you think I pick? :)

I can't stand the way that Big's Als catalog is arranged and price is relative, they are cheaper on some things, high on others, and about the same as everyone else for the rest. I like using Foster's and Smith and That Fish Place, and occasionally even Pet Solutions better. ;)

I've never been to the Big Al's website, but I live in Vancouver and there are 2 giant 'warehouses' within 45 mins of me. I like them because they specialize in fish and fish products, where as all of the other local stores around here are for all pets. Huge fish selection, giant shark tank! I didn't buy my new tank there because they were about $30 more expensive than my lfs. But overall they have knowledegable people working there and take good care of thier fish.

I also use DrsFosterSmith and have been really pleased. Last time, I placed an online order at 11PM on a Sunday night and UPS (or maybe it was FedEx?) delivered the package at 7:00PM on Tuesday evening. I was really impressed.

Okay, so Big Al's / Aquarium Services has stores across Canada. I guess they just ship to the States?? Anyway, they have a really nice selection of fish and don't have any diseased/dying tanks. Pretty good with knowledge but prices are too steep. PetSmart is cheaper for everything, but I still don't buy fish tanks from stores.

You can buy a 64oz. Stress Coat there for only $16 when that's as much as you pay for the regular large one. I like to buy it from www.bigalsonline.com :D

Big als is a Canadian pet store. They have multiple warehouses in the US so shipping here is also pretty quick. I know they have one warehouse in NY, not sure where the others are.

I usually get things I order from them in 2-3 days.

Big Al's is great for many things- I get my big ticket items there. Eheim filters, bulk Flourish, bulk filter media, etc.
They don't send confirmation emails or give you tracking numbers- nobody holds your hand in other words. The order just kind of shows up about a week and a half later for me in South Florida.

I do shop other online vendors- Big Al doesn't have some brands that I like, and Ebay is always a great alternative for many items. Heck- between Big Al's, Ebay, and Aquabid I can cover all my freshwater needs.

My LFS has offered to meet any price but when I showed up wanting a Penquin filter and showed them the online price they declined. So it's online shopping for me- you just have to plan well ahead and order stuff a bit before you actually need it.

Heh... you think their website is nuts... walk into a store.
The one they have in Ottawa (ottawa propoer, not the other one in Kanata about 20 mins away) has more fish than any THREE chainstores.

And you're never bugged by the staff. You just take a clipboard, mark down the fish you want, and hand it to them :)

I would not think of buying anything(except fish) without checking Big Al's first. The prices just can't be beat, especially since they guarantee that they will beat any advertised price that is lower by 5%. Even with shipping, the proces are always lower. It usually takes 3 days to get my order. They have a warehouse in Niagra Falls.

Jeremy S

Big Al's has done price matches for me on several things. What I like to do is find the item that I am going to order on Big Al’s and then do a froogle (http://froogle.google.com/) search for it. After you froogle (http://froogle.google.com/) it you call them and give the web site name that had the lowest price and they’ll beat it by 5%. They even matched the price of the tronic heaters that pet solutions had on clearance. It does take them a little longer to ship your order then Drs Foster and Smith but I think it’s worth it.

Philbe
12-15-2003, 2:51 PM
If you don't have an Als store nearby, use the net prices and get the chains to match it . Example: Petcetra price for the fluval2 49.99, Als online 39.99, Als store 37.99. Guy at Petcetra called to verify and I had my credit. I suppose I'm lucky in that I have Als(not Kanata), Petsmart and a Petcetra within a 15min drive of each other.

Anyone know if Big Al's LFS operation is expanding to Halifax, Nova Scotia? I remember reading about a month ago on their site something about a future location. If you've heard anything please let me know.

Halifax desperately needs LFS competition to drive down some of the inflated prices, especially on equipment.

I wouldn't consider that a good thing. I ordered some Flourish Excel and a couple other things on the 7th...and as per their policy I received no tracking number. I called on the 18th to see where my order was, come to find out that my order was just sitting in their computer not going anywhere. I ended up getting the runaround for 4 calls, the end result being that my order will be shipped UPS 3 day express. That kinda made up for the runaround....not totally  .

The moral of the story?? Call them 3 days after you place your order and ask them for the tracking number (the orders don't receive tracking numbers until they get to the US and go through customs, hence the 3 day wait).

The only problem I have ever had is with my last order of flourish potassium and flourish iron. I ordered them on November 23 and I still haven't recieved it. I made about 3 or 4 calls and it turns out that it ws damaged and sent back to the warehouse. However, they never sent out another order. So, I called and they said they got the package back and would send out another order, except that they were out of stock of both things. The woman said I would get the order around wednesday and it's not saturday. It looks like I will be making another call. This is the only problem I have ever had with them.

Most companies are concerned about customer satisfaction. Should we send them a link to this thread to give them an idea about how we feel about their service etc?

It might be worth their while to create a two tiered shipping option like many other web based stores do. You pay big for 3 day delivery or less for 7 - 10 day shipping.

BTW, as customer service screw-ups go...mine is pretty minor. When I realize how much money they have saved me over buying at a local store...I can forgive them if they make a mistake every once in a while. I'm not in dire need of of a test kit, or Flourish.

As for everyone's problems...just call them. Then follow-up. If they don't call you back in a reasonable amount of time, take the initiative and call them again. A good question to ask is, "when can I call and receive my tracking numer". I work in customer service and let me tell you it's all in the wording.

I'm surprised none of the Canadians have mentioned this yet, but they totally screw us over with prices here in the country that they are based in.

The exact same prices are not listed EVEN CLOSE to the amount posted on the american website. For example go look at the eheim pro 2224. $139 US or $279 CDN.

After the exchange that's a difference of over $60 US on the exact same product. What's the deal with that?

I tried speaking to them a long time ago regarding this matter and the answers are total BS.

I have a US address that I use for ordering electronics and some other items that I can't get in canada, and I pick them up and bring them over the border. But I never purchase from Big al's only because they are a canadian company scamming canadians. They're mega stores are close to my house too, but I buy from the LFS.

Hello (name omitted),
I had tracked down your order in the warehouse and put it on a three day express. I was told things had been slowed down because of the Christmas season. I do apologize for the inconvenience. That folks is pure BS. The tracking number I FINALLY received says it's going to be delivered on 1/2. Not only were these items orginally ordered on the evening of 12/5 with the intention of them being Christmas gifts, it's pretty aparent that they didn't ship the items 3-day express. I got their standard 2 week crap. This has turned from a minor inconvenience, into a full-service screwing...and I don't like it.

When you have a problem, I think it is best to call rather than e-mail. That way, they can tell how serious you are by the tone of your voice.;) I'll forgive them though because they have the best prices anywhere.

It was funny. I called the other day because I still haden't gotten my order from 425645 days before. The woman I was speaking to said some things and told me to hold on for a moment. She came back like 15 seconds later and was like, "now, how many gallons in this tank do you want the product for?" I was like, "uhhhhhhhhhhhhh I just wanted to check the status of an order." I've always noticed that online stuffs are cheaper in US than in Canada becoz of the lack of online competition here. But man, this's probably the first time I see THE SAME COMPANY has such a HUGE price difference selling to US vs Canada, and make that a Canadian-based company too!! Even their US and Canadian sites are exactly the same.

Just looking at the first page of their site right now, the Emporer400Biowheel filter is $39.99USD vs $99.99Cdn!!! After exchange rate, that's almost DOUBLE  the price we have to pay in Canada, that's total BS

I've visited BigAl's stores in Toronto a few many times, to their credit their fish stock is great. But I think i'm gona do my shopping in LFS more from now on. Mind you the LFS is just as expensive but at least they aren't ripping fellow countrymen's money to then possibly subsidize their hugely discounted US-division.

BTW, i found this Cdn site www.petsandponds.com which I haven't tried, but their price is good. Unfortunately their selections of products are very very limited. But for some basic stuffs, may worth a try, which i'm going to. Sry for long post.

WoW.... good find.... prices are a lot cheaper then BA's on the three items I checked and they're in Orillia...... Fluval 204 $86 at BA's $99 ...... AC 500 power filter $59 at BA's $74 ... Ebo Jagar 250w heater $37 at BA's $42 and it wouldn't take much of a purchase to cover shipping costs ... lovin it :) some competition .... now to send the site to BA's head office in Markham ;)

J&JsTA (or if anyone know): Just want to ask you did you succeed to make BA beat the competing price by 5%? How exactly do you tell them about the lower price elsewhere? just email them the websites before ordering? Oh and do you know will BA do the price match if I'm doing my first online ordering? I emailed BA, but they aren't replying... not yet anyway

I was thinking of buying a few things from BA's as well but they way they rip-off their own countrymen is pathetic. Why should we Canadians have to pay upwards of 100% more for the very same product. As a result I'm likely not going to order from them but give my business to the LFS and to American online stores. Sorry BA... get with the program and you'll get more Canadian customers.

I know, that's really sad. 100% isn't that drastic already... try this on BA frontpage right now: "CustomSealife PC 48" strip light"... USD$82.99 in US-site...and for Canadian-site..(drumroll)..Cdn$399.99...or 370% the price in US. woh

They wouldn't even respond to my email .. it was direct but a tame note and no response.... if I find something I want to buy and it's cheaper then BA's I would go into the store and show it to them at the counter and get an answer from the manager.... if they don't comply simply buy the cheaper one at the other store :)

Hate to jump on the bandwagon so late and no, I didn't read all 5 pages...

One thing I don't like about BA's is that if an item is out of stock, you don't know until you order and the order is processed, then you have to re-order that item(s) and pay for shipping! Drs. Foster&Smith is good about this, they ship they out of stock item when it comes in w/o charging shipping.
At least that's the way it has been (with BA's) unless they recently changed it. I don't know because they didn't answer my email after receiving my last order and I realized two items were "out of stock" but there were no instructions to reorder.
I let them know with a friendly constructive critisizm email.

Another thing, if you Canadians make a stink and drive up the price for us Americans...uh...I don't know...we'll call you names?;) :D

J&J, thanks anyway

The only way they will beat other stores prices is if you call them. They don’t do it over email. I have done this a couple of time and they always do it.

Looks like not answering emails is the key to BA's online service : )

I doubt BA-online will ever listen and even less likely will they drive up the US price. Not that it matter, with so many other cheap alternative online stores in US, right.

I think one problem with BA is that it's a 'loose" franchise store. All the individual stores and the online store are almost totally separate. Like I have a VIP card registered in one BA store in Scarborough, and when I went the another BA store in Whitby, I couldn't use the same VIP to accumulate points, had to register again and collect points separately. The same goes for the online BA. Even the price are different, my new light strip is $139 regular price in Whitby BA, but $149 online. Fish stock price varies alot too between stores.

Interesting. I'm still waiting for an email I had sent to them this past Saturday. I guess they do not take their customers seriously. How unfortunate.

Indeed, BA is the one and only one fish-only fanchise here. And SuperPet is the only other franchise that offers good selection of fish stuffs. PetsMart has ok fish-equipment, but crappy fish/plants stock. There's a 3-4 store smaller franchise "PJ" in Toronto area, but I think it may have been bought-out by SuperPet, as the pictures in their flyers are exactly the same. We need someone to open a poormen's fish franchise here for some competition :)

Hey look.. 3 weeks after I sent the email to BA's I got an answer to my ?... maybe they are monitoring this site?? ;)

Like it or not here it is:

Thank you for the email , The price differemces between US and Canada are 2 fold.

.1 the extra shipping and duty to bring the product in to Canada.

2. The Canadian retail division has legal contract for prices set with in Canada ,our online company can not sell for under the retail in the store.
I am sorry for the end result but there is a reason for this ,not we are out to shaft Canadians.

I find their excuses quite pathetic.

At the end of the day they have a warehouse in both countries. Even if they pay a little extra for shipping, fine. But duty? Such a large company like this "get around" certain duties especiallly in light of NAFTA agreements.

Their contractural obligations are as a result of their retail operations which I understand. However, if you live 2 hours away from their nearest store than why should we get shafted. And yes they are out to shaft Canadians.

I will never order anything from them! I'd rather give my money to another Cdn online store or... gulp... and American one. They just lost a big spending customer. Idiots!

My two cents on the matter.

They lost me a long time ago, I wanted to purchase a Kent nautilus TE protein skimmer, BA was charging a whoppping $420. I wound up buying one online for $200 canadian+shipping and duties. The only reason I go there anymore is for livestock and plants, and even then it's a rip off. They sell tropica plants for $16 a pop! I can go just down the street and buy 3 for only $7!! When asked if they'd beat the prices they said, "No flyer, no discount".

Just wanted to chime in and say that I have been very happy with my on-line ordering experience with Big Al's. These days they do send traking info the next day when the product ships. I live in Virginia, and have always received my orders in 2-3 days, like clockwork.

On one of my 1st orders, it turns out they were out of stock on one item. They called me and we I switched to another item instead.
