I am going to get some pygmy's this weekend, I have a 29 gallon that I want to put a large group of them in, it has pool filter sand as the substrate. I also have a small piece of mapani driftwood with a spotted raphael constantly attached to it, will a raphael eat them or hurt the pygmy cory's?, if so I can move him to my 55 gallon. I was thinking on getting between 12-15 pygmy's for the tank---also was wondering if the 29 is to high for pygmy's to swim, have heard it's best to have a shorter tank. I was also wanting to get some for my 10 gallon that has regular natural aquarium gravel in it along with 3 female platy's---thought about 8-10 would this be O.K.? I'm hoping to eventually get some pygmy cory's, maybe some dwarf platy's,otto's and or ghost shrimp to put into the tank, I've always thought it'd be cool to have a dwarf/pygmy tank setup with all small minature fish. Even thought about setting up my 55 gallon and putting some dwarf chain loaches in there, would the 29 be to small for a group of dwarf chain loaches and pygmy cory's together?
A 29 is fine for the pygmys. You could keep several dozen in that sized tank. 8-10 in a 10 gallon is not a problem. Don't worry about the tall tank because that type cory will swim up in the water column and not just stay on the bottom. I keep mine with guppies. If you put a few plants in there they'll sit on the leaves. Very cool.
Hope this helps-Bob

Almost forgot. Dwarf chain loaches will go great with your pygmies in a 29.

Rjb3 is correct. You could put a few dozen in the 29. I kept a breeding group of 38 in a 20L with natural gravel and the tank seemed empty all the time. The bigger the group the safer they feel and they shoal very nicely, They are tiny! I think they swim more in the open if there are dither fish in there with them which I didn't have because of breeding them.
Size-wise, you'd probably be better off adding cherry shrimp someday instead of the larger ghost shrimp.
I'm not familiar with the personality of the raphael, so can't help you on that. And sids are a great non-aggressive small loach. The cories would be fine.

I have a bunch of java moss to go into the tank and a large piece or two of mopani driftwood, so if I got 2 or 3 java plants and attach to the drift wood or some amazon plants do you think that'd work. I want to get plants that are only low light.

What's the minimum number of dwarf chain loaches I can start out with? They are 9.99 each and I probably won't have the money this time for alot. I would like to have around 6-8 of them in the tank, I know they like to school. I have 4 yo-yo's in my 55 and they are always following each other around the tank and playing. If I have to I'll save up my money and get the group at one time. Also how long do the pygmy cory's and dwarf chain loaches live?
3-4 is a good start on the dwarf chains. 5-10 years on the corys and I'm not sure how long Sids live.

That's actually a great price for the SIDS. Some of mine were twice that amount.

Got back from the pet store yesterday with 14 of the pygmy cory's, they have a black stripe down there size and are at the most 3/4 inch in size. Also was able to bring home 4 small true siamese algae eaters that are about a inch and half long or maybe a little smaller, they were 3.99 each---they have a black stripe down their sides from the tip of the nose to the very end of the middle of the tail. Also brought home a female cherry shrimp that cost me 3.99, she is full of eggs. They are all now happy and swimming in the 29 gallon together, the SAE's and cory's are schooling together, I can see why cause except for the sizes they do look very similar. I know that the SAE's will get larger, I'll move them into my other 55 gallon as soon as it is set up in a few months.
I had thought about taking the AC 110 FILTER off of the 29 and putting on my other 55 gallon, then getting a large sponge filter and setting up a breeding coloney of pygmy cory and cherry shrimp. Do you think this would work?
I'll be heading back to the pet store in a month or so and picking up another dozen or so of these cory's and maybe 3-4 more cherry shrimp.
I was thinking about possibly saving some money also for a few months and picking up 7-8 of the dwarf chain loaches and put them into the 29 with the cory's, they are 9.99 each so saving would be my best bet.
Also at present time I have a dozen or so baby platy's and I was wondering if I could put them into the 29 with these other fish until they got a little larger?

Eventually the sids will probably get to the shrimp, but they should be ok with the corys for now.
Your baby platies would work fine.

Think I should go ahead and move the sae's into the 55 gallon?, there is plenty of algae in the tank for them to eat.

The larger the tank, the better IMO. Its up to you at this point.

the SAE will eventually get around 5" so I would recommend moving it to the 55, or you can wait till it grows a bit.
