If i'm going to have an RCS only tank, (10G) can i use just a sponge filter with out a HOB or do i need to have an HOB?

The way i have my tanks set up now, is with both an HOB and sponge filter but thats because i had snails and shrimp in the one tank.

I am moving in a couple of weeks and when i re do my tanks at my new house, one is just going to be strictly for my RCS colony. no snails, well besides MTS and some rams i'm sure.

I plan to take the sponge filter out of my shrimp/invert tank now, and use it in my rcs tank.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

I see some people use sponge filter with even CRS and success. So I guess as long as your water condition is good, it is not necessary to have a HOB filter. But it really depends on how much plant you have in tank, how many shrimps u have, and how often you monitor water condition, and how often you change water....

A smallest HOB filter from Marianland should be enough for a 10G tank on the other end. I used to have hundreds of RCS in a 10G tank, with a small HOB marineland filter, and water is crystal clear.

I have a sponge filter on my HOB for RCS. I still find some baby shrimp in the filter, but they don't get chopped up or anything.

For a shrimp tank, I would go for a sponge alone. More babies will survive. The only downsides to sponge filters are that they are ugly, and you can't really run any specialized media (carbon, ammozorb, or anything like that.) As far as mechanical and biological filtering, as long as they have sufficient flow, sponge filters are just as good as hob's.

yeah, i am debating finding a small HOB as well that i can use and put a sponge over the intake tube, as well as a sponge filter.
