I've been thinking about different ideas for small tanks and had got a 10"x12" glass hurricane (round) a while back that I used as a quarantine for a bit. It's been running for a while, but without much going on in it. Finally the other day I had an unplanned purchase, and ended up bringing home a halfmoon betta. Today I decided to replant the tank.
It's around 4 gallons. I'm heating it with a 2.5w hydor pad heater, and have a tiny Tom micro filter that just points up, to aid in light circulation. It gets a lot of natural sunlight, but is lit for viewing by an Ikea LED gooseneck lamp. The stand was a stroke of luck, a plant stand I found on my street, hardwood with thread-in levelers. I do not want a full gravel bottom on the tank, because the light it gives off in the room is amazing at night, so I've opted for 2 glass bowls, and a third hanging bowl, filled with white sand over 1/4" of flora base. The hanging bowl should be great for starting HC wads, keeping it only 2" below the water surface in direct sunlight several hours a day.
In terms of plants, i started with 3 rooty bamboo stalks that had been growing in water in chinatown, and a selection of clippings that have been doing well in my other tanks, rotala indica, dwarf sag, willow moss and swaserwhatever. I also planted a few sprouts of HM and HC to see if they'd take.
