Hi
I have bought a pair of Cichlids which were marked in the shop as Geophagus.
Advised by the owner that it was a peaceful Cichlid at around 4 Inches as a adult and would go OK with the pair of Keyholes that I already have.
Doing an online search on the Genus to get further info I cannot seem to find anything that looks similar except a small pic identifying it as a Brasiliensis on a spanish web page. But a search on the full name I cannot find any other pictures that match making me think that the Spanish site has possibly mis-identified the fish.
They are around 2 Inches at the moment picture attached
Any Ideas as to what my new pair are?
Cheers

go to fishbase.org in the genus box type in geophagus, that will give you all the know geophagus to look through.
the pictures (or a link to google images) are in the top right of the page that comes up.
Have you tried www.cichlidae.com

Try searching for Microgeophagus altispinosa and see if any pictures match what you have. These are called Bolivian Rams.

Go with Z Man. It's definitely M. altispinosa...
my guess is biotodoma cupido, the cupid cichlid.

hope the link works.
they are peacefull eartheaters that get up to 5". id say if it is either an altaspinoza or a cupid it should do fine with the keyholes. i was actually thinking of setting up a keyhole/eartheater 55g in the near future and have had my eye on a fine pair of cupids at the LFS.

I have a bolivian ram. Yours looks similar, the colors look a little different, but thats probebly just the camera. The fins look a lot longer too. Maybe a slightly different kind?

Agree with Z Man and Marcus. Definitely M. altispinosa. For one thing, I have kept this fish before. For another, if you look at the location of the spot on the pic Rich posted, it's not in the right place.
Having said all that, these fish do NOT get to be 4" long, at least not in my universe. Depending on how aggressive your Keyholes are, they might still make it, but I'd give them their own 29 gallon tank and see if they breed. Incidentally, if the pic you posted is of your own fish, (1) nice photo, but (2) the fish is definitely too thin. I'd spoil them for a while with frozen bloodworms, live brine shrimp, and other such treats, to see if they will put on some weight.
Good luck.

Thanks for the Great response and Info Guys
I tend to agree that it looks like a Ram and looking at the Microgeophagus altispinosa it seem to fit.
Mine are not a colourful as some of the pics but the shape and colouration is right and the sizing looks good as well.
They are in the tank and seem very happy and interested in the outside world.
