i was in a bind, was trying to find calcium pills like you mentioned in another thread but wasnt able to see if you responded to the post that i made. i have two shellkids with some major shell erosion and am trying to do anything i can to help them regrow their shells before i ship them off to a loving parent who has the ability to repair their shells.

ahh, good deal :) I like the plaster of paris pucks or vacation feeders better than tums. They last longer andcan be placed out of the flow. If buying vacation feeders, make sure they are phosphate free as the phosphates can cause algae blooms. Wondershells are a good brand to use.
I agree with Rach. Start making plaster of Paris pucks. An inch cube lasts me 2-3 weeks.

Regarding Tums... I've found if I put one in before bed the cloudyness is usually gone by the time I wake up.
Or if I put one in before going to work it's gone before I get home.
I only put one in at a time though in a 55 gallon.
Regarding PoP- isn't it supposed to actually help CLEAR your water? Anyone know how that works?
With PoP don't make the mistake I made at first- be carefull not to get the quick-dry kind... it has additives you don't want... (fortunately I was suspicious and checked this)... also make sure there are no anti microbal additives.

I've added a single Tums to a 10 gallon and never experienced any cloudiness per se, just a little mess on the substrate.

It probably depends on water chemistry as to whether tums cloud the water. It does to a degree for me- but not terribly. Consider yourself lucky if Tums doesn't cloud your water!
If I drop a tums in then for a few hours I can tell because the water definately gets a little cloudy. It's not terrible... but noticable. Same thing happens after a really good sand stirring... I get slightly cloudy water for an hour or so.
Now, I do break my tums into quarters before dropping it in rather than drop in the whole thing- that way I can drop it in at different places around the tank and allow more critters access to it.

this is my 2nd tums addition. the first one had no cloudy water (or at least i didnt see any) today i had some. so i guess it is hit or miss. i also got the 'variety pack of flavors' so maybe i chose a non-cloudy flavor the first time and a cloudy flavor the 2nd

Which flavours are you using... I put in a berry flavoured every 2 or 3 days.

i dont know, considering the rush i was in i 'placed' the tums into the tank from about 10 feet away. i didnt look to see which one i grabbed. it was a good throw actually.

I used citrus.
Regarding PoP- isn't it supposed to actually help CLEAR your water? Anyone know how that works?
It does in my experience. Any tank I placed the plaster of Paris pucks in has its water clarified. It worked very well in neutralizing the cloudy effect caused by Tums.
With PoP don't make the mistake I made at first- be carefull not to get the quick-dry kind... it has additives you don't want... (fortunately I was suspicious and checked this)... also make sure there are no anti microbal additives.
The one I used was quick-dry. I may need to find the box again because I forgot the ingredients.
