View Full Version : My blood parrot is drivin me NUTS!!!!

A few weeks ago i purchased this guy for $60. a beutiful blood parrot cichlid that i could not resist. He was bright red, i figured it would fade but the guy a the fish store said he was fed HAIFENG Fast Color, he is a very good owner of a LFS so i purchased the food.
I feed per the instructions and he ate well for around two weeks nad now hangs out doing much of nothing and is slowly turning orange. oh he'll eat my expensive food but not the food i purchased just for him that everyone else in the tank puts up with and eats like he should. Why is he so choosey about food now? should i give in? or should i continue to hope he eats this stuff?

I had that kind of problem with my Oscar. He decided all of a sudden that he only wanted to eat fresh food and not pellets. I found it helpful to fast him for a day and then offer pellets to him. Now he eats them without a problem.
Once the fish tasted something that is better...will always want that food. One of my BPs doesn't like shrimp but hikari gold, frozen brine shrimp and bloodworm. It just so happend that some fishes are picky no matter what.
Also, there are reasons for bps to lose color. It isn't about that "special" food you feed them. My bps eat hikari cold and frozen food. They maintain their color. However, if the water chemistry isn't right, they'll lose their redness too. Need to keep the water clean and etc.

Water and tank are maintained very well, even over filtered ph @ 7.2.
Should a let him "starve" or give in and feed him the good stuff?

Good stuff brings out more color that what so called "special" food. I don't give my bps special food. they all eat the same thing as my other cichlids. And their colors are either bright yellow or red.
Are you sure it's actually a blood red and not a jellybean?
My daughter's JB's have both turned a pretty orange from red and purple (believe me..I know! I don't like the fish, she picked them out and daddy bought them!)
Though i will say, they are pretty fish. I just don't like them!
