No, this isn't a sales pitch, and no, someone didn't hack my account and start posting spam, lmbo. I really think this is awesome and wanted to share.

My girls have been gone for a month to their father's house in VA, and they just got home yesterday. There is a new little girl in the neighborhood that moved in since they left. The three of them were playing together yesterday, when this 9 year old little girl showed my girls her cell phone and told them about www.safelinkwireless.com (http://www.safelinkwireless.com)

I checked it out, and it turns out that it is a government funded program for lower income families to provide wireless phones. If you qualify, you get a free phone, voicemail, caller ID, and call waiting, and a certain amount of minutes each month. It isn't available in every state, but here in MI I qualified for 68 free minutes a month. If you do run out of minutes you can purchase additional minutes with a TracFone prey-pay card. Any of the free minutes that you don't use roll over to the next month.

I have wanted to get a cell for the kids for quite awhile, but it just never was in the budget. We have to pay a security deposit to add a line, like a lot of people do. So, I filled out the app, and my girls will have their phone in 5-10 business days. They know it is for emergencies only and for me to get a hold of them if they are out playing at a friend's house. It will give me some more peace of mind, for sure.

I checked and it is not yet available in all states, but there are quite a few participating. From the website:

Alabama, Connecticut, D. of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

SafeLink Wireless Service is coming soon to... Arizona Illinois Kentucky Missouri Ohio Puerto Rico Texas Washington

The approval process was simple and the income requirements are pretty dang reasonable. I really urge parents or those that need an emergency phone to check this out!

"I would not pay more than $20 for this!" Hehehe...

Honestly though, this is a good program and I know some people who do use it. Especially in this economy, if you need a cellphone but really don't use that many minutes, this can save you a lot of cash.

I told some people here locally about it too, and I already know of two that have phones on the way! I think this is really awesome. I am so glad I can finally have a direct line to the girls at all times!

this is good,. but we got some from walmart, they are verizon wireless, prepay they come in a bubble pack. its 29.99 comes with 10.00 pre loaded,
you can choose to have unlimited minutes for 3.99 per day only if you use it,.. you can call anywhere all day for this price or 2 other choices,..
the cheapest is .99 per day only if you use it. ie answer a call or dial a call,.. but your limited to choices of calls,..
free to all verizon wireless,... also
15.00 per card and it expires at a certian date,..

its another way to be safe,.. if you don't use it often like me and my kids,..
also with this featured phone you can track all calles made,.. but not incomming calls,.. you can get the minutes it was but not number,

locking into verizon regular wireless, cause they have the chaperone feature you can check where your kid/ phone is on your phone or computer, shows the phone on a map where they are,.. but only in coverage area,..

so good if your worried about your kids,..

but thanks for the heads up,.. i 've known about this for a while,.. but have heard a few negatives about it,.. don't remember what though,.. lol

Well, I can't argue too much with free, but I will make sure to let everyone know how well it works out once we get the phone in the mail.

That's cool... i can't believe California is not on the list... They will give money and healthcare to people who are here illegally... but they won't give a cellphone to anyone...

Well, I got the girls' phone today. It is a pretty nice little Motorola. I did a test text message to it, and it only cost .3 minutes for a text, so that will be useful for when I have to just tell them to come home for lunch, lol. I will update with how the rest of it goes. Seems to have real good signal.

My mom uses this. When I lost my job we couldn't maintain our t-mobile, so she had me apply for her and so far she likes it. She's had it since April. From what I gather, it's your pretty standard tracfone service. They're pretty good, I have an emergency $20 tracfone as well. I have service nearly everywhere, battery lasts long without being charged, the prices are fair.
