I was at the real LFS today (it's good to be back from the rigors of college life) and I saw a crayfish tank. I fondly remembered all of the delightful crayfish threads. When I looked at the price, I was shocked. They were only $2 each, and these crayfish were at least 5 inches long. I'm sure that they aren't the super-rare kind, but I was always under the impression that crayfish were really expensive, that's one reason so few people have them.

For $2 a pop, I might just have to buy one. Not to keep as a pet-- to eat. Is it worth it? All these crayfish threads have made me hungry. Anyway, they are advertised as feeders, maybe this applies to humans, too. They even let you buy one to feed to the in-store moray eel if you want.

eating anything from an aquarium could be hazardous. these things are shipped and treated with chemicals to de-stress them often enough, for one. besides, there's not much meat on a crayfish, and you can do better than $2 a pop i'm sure getting them intended for human consumption.

yeah crayfish are cheap, I got mine for 2$. its the fancy blue ones that go for more(around 20$ here). I have even seen LFs giving away the regular red ones.

More people don't have them because they usually eat anythign else in the tank so its best not to keep them with fish or plants. So not too many people are going to keep them if they have to be in a species tank.

I wouldnt' eat it as they have most likely been treated with chemicals(as previously said). Have you ever read the back of most medication packages. It says "not to be used on fish for human consumption".

PLus 2$ for 1 crayfish, even up here in the north you can find them cheaper then that at the grocery store. So if you want to eat crayfish go to a resturant or buy some at a super market

Down here I can get them for probably 2$ or less a pound. Or free if I want to go fish them myself. And these are guaranteed eatable :D I have never seen one for sell in a LFS either.

Well, we don't have crayfish up here... but at the right time I can get live lobster for $4/lb :)

NOW you tell me! J/k. I really wasn't going to eat a crayfish from the LFS, but I suppose I should have used some sort of emoticon to indicate sarcasm. But I think I will order some from a seafood restaurant next time I go. Do crayfish taste just like lobster?
