Well I got up for work this morning and and found on of my female briggs snails on my concrete basement floor in front of the tank.. I assume she was looking for a place to lay eggs (which bothers me cuz the water level is down about 2") anyway, a portion of her shell broke off (leading me to believe she fell from the top of the tank probably 4'), it's about the size of half a finger nail and about that wide, it's right above her face. well I picked her up right away and dropped her back in the tank. She hasn't came back out of the shell.. well not fully anyway, I can see her face and her trap is open at about a 45* angle and I can see her "vent" opening and closing so I know she's alive.. but could she still be in shock? or should I think that she is just in misery and freeze her?? I want what's best for her =(

any help, suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I wouldn't panic. I would take an emery board and file down any sharp edges first. Then just watch her. Make sure she is in clean water and has something close to eat and then see what happens.

ok I did that and I put her in a breeders net with a small piece of snail jello right in front of her.. when I picked her up out of the tank she pulled herself all the way in the shell so I know she's still alive.. I am just so sad =(

The wait and see approach is probably best. If she isn't able to heal the fissure there are ways to repair it but I wouldn't rush into them.

I hope she will be ok!

you might want to look in to a secure fitting top... or close in any gaps. that way you don't have to worry about this again.

the whole back is secured.. except about a 1-2" gap on the far end right next to the filter.. I never thought it would be an issue =( the filter lid is even set down so they couldn't climb up the "flow area" of the HOB.. I thought I was already being overcautious =(

Here's a cpl pics anyway.

And here's her now.. edging out.. hopefully.. after the filing.. which I have to admit was pretty weird.. filling down a live animal

That sort of break is not of huge detriment to your snail. Luckily for you <and her> she didn't break the shell over her organs. In time, that leading edge should fill back in. For now, keeping her in a breeder trap and limiting her movement a little is just fine.

Thanks MsJ.

I am currently trying to figure out how to fill in that 2" spot.. I have some screen here.. it's just the ingenuity I'm lacking lol
