I know I have asked this a gazillion years ago but I forgot the redponses and still have the same issue and question. I have a light with fan vents on the sides over my 75 gallon tank. I have the top of the canopy open because I have the light on legs and it sits too high for the cover to close. My question is, would it be safe to keep the light down on the glass covers of the tank? The lights wouldn't be sitting directly on the glass but would be supported by the tank frame. I am worried I guess that if the bulbs get too hot, would the glass cover crack... the light is not open bulb, it has a clear plastic cover to protect it from water....

did I manage to confuse anyone?

I don't see any problem with it. Esspecially with fans running.

I'm guessing a 4ft, 40w light or 2?

I think even just putting the light on the glass hood would be fine, they do that for most hoods anyway right? Thats what I've found out. I'm not too sure, but i don't think the glass would crack at all.

The glass will be fine.

I dont think CFLs create enough heat to cause any problems to the glass...

I have a 130w Corallife PC sitting on a glass top & a 3x32w T8 on another, no fan & no problems.

it's a pretty elaborate light, not sure of the name but it fits 8 bulbs in it and 2 fans on each end of it.

I think I am going to brave it and take the legs off and see how it goes. Thanks for the confidence, guys :)

As long as there is ventilation it should be fine. Though heat buildup will just decrease the life of the bulbs.

I have alot of different lights just sitting on glass tops. Another alternative that I really like is hanging them pendant style. Either way, i think it should probably be fine DD.

Many lights are actually designed to be set right on a glass top, and say not to use them without one. One thing to watch is that the canopy will trap heat more with it shut. Even heating won't be a problem for the glass, but it might cause problems for the fixture or the tank's temp. Just make sure that the light doesn't get too hot under the canopy, and maybe install a fan in the open part in the back of the canopy. This shouldn't be a problem if your lights have fans though.

It should be fine. Those bulbs don't create enough heat to the point where it'll do any damage to the glass or the frame.
