Does anyone know if Cambarellus shufeldtii will breed with Cambarellus Patzcuarensis sp. Orange? I don't currently have them in the same tank together, but it would be great to know for future reference...

I know the wild-type of Patzcuarensis is brown/tan- so if the two are capable of hybridising I assume most/all the offspring would look like Shufeldtii.

Definately interesting to know if they can be cohabitated.

Yeah, I would imagine they would revert back to their natural color which would devalue them.

Google turned up this:

I am currently working on mixing different members of the Cambarellus genus after having seen a contact/breeder in Germany produce several gorgeous hybrids within this group.
I'm currently working with:
-Cambarellus montezumae
-Cambarellus patzcuarensis sp. orange
-Cambarellus shufeldtii
Thus far, I've only had semi-success with a male shufeldtii and a female montezumae. In which the pair successfully mated and the female produced a berry, however the female mysteriously died before the berry came to term. I hoping to acquire more members of this genus (mainly patzcuarensis sp. chocolate and puer) to try different hybrid results.

Someone who WANTED them to cross but was having difficulty. So maybe they can be kept together with frequent hybridization.

Awesome! Thanks Wycco. I'm having a hard time finding time to research this for myself since I'm at work. :( I love this forum, LOL.

BTW... I did discover that whereas multiple genes control factors such as patterns, and amount of pigmentation expressed- Orange vs Brown colouration is controlled by a single gene. Orange is simple recessive to Brown.

Therefore were they to cross- the first generation offspring would all be brown- but there would be Orange offspring produced in later generations and breeding any two of those orange offspring from the second generation would result in all orange young.

That is... assuming any hybrids were not sterile to begin with.

That's great! Now if we can figure out how to get the bright Red Patzcuarensis. LOL

I don't know- but they might be one's with two copies of the orange gene- but with other genes also that are set for increased pigment production.

Might be able to find brown ones with a lot of pigment- cross it with an orange and within a few generations have bright red ones...

... or that might not work at all... LOL

I suppose they could also be like apple snails where there are two genes at play- one for base colour- one for shell colour.

With crayfish perhaps a inner exoskeleton pigmentation gene and an outer exoskeleton pigmentation gene and the two combined show as red. Dunno... would be nice if there were more research available on it.

It could be internal and external. I never thought of that. Too bad I can't afford to hire a team of scientists. :P

Great research though Wycco! It's much appreciated.

BTW, I found a pic of the red ones...
