need a trick to get my dumb CAE outta the tank

Put a slice of zucchini in a large jar on the bottom of the tank, and be ready with the net.

Use two nets, try and chase him into one with the other. That's the only only option I can give you. Other than that, removing some of the decorations is your only option.
You could probably chance it and make a trap out of a 2L bottle, make a hole large enough for him to fit into, put in an algae wafer and hope that he takes it and someone else doesn't.

is it just me, or is the CAE agressive?? i have never heard of an agressive algea grazer, i think mine must be a lil messed up in the noodle!

I've got the same issue. I was going to take my CAE to the LFS and I couldn't catch him for the life of me. He's gotten very hyper, agressive, and scared of humans around the tank with age. Friggin thing nips fins and head buts fish so it's time to for it to go. My only suggestion would be to remove ALL your decorations and play catch the fast fish.

CAE can be very aggresive, usually when older.

As for catching, this is what i do in my planted tnak or my african tnak full of rocks. I take out some of the decorations on one side of the tank. Then i take some eggcrate and use it as a divider, I leave a little opening between the eggcrate and the glass for hte fish to swim through. I then stick my hand or a net and "scare" the fish i want onto the clear side and close off with the eggcrate. Its easier to catch them if they are in a smaller space free ofdecorations.

This way has worked very well for me. I tried catching 8 of my fish in my90g the regular way and i tried for 45mins with no success.I added the divider and within 10mins i had all 8 out.

I do like the zuchini jar thign though. I will have to try that next time i need to catch a pleco.

Just a month ago i removed my orange CAE out of my 20 gal because he was sucking on my angel and chasing fish. little brat. I have a heavily planted tank with rocks and driftwood and there was NO WAY i was gonna take all that out. So i just removed the driftwood cave that was easy enough to take out. Then, very slowly, i followed him around with the net. At first he would dart everywhere and hide in the plants. Then, slowly, he started to get 'used' to the net and wouldn't run away as fast. Then when he was up against the glass WHAM!!!!! I pinned him with the net and that was that. Took around 10 mins.

 Good luck my dear! I tried to get mine out and it went inside a castle that I have to the very top where he refused to come out. I took the castle out of the water and he still would not come out. I poked him with a ball point pen and anything else I could find. I shaked the thing and everything! Stupid fish. Finally he came out. My suggestion, if you have anything he can get inside of take it out. Try using two nets too. ;)
