Beautiful Alto, Pitt... the blue tinted one.. I'm disappointed in my Gold Calvus, he's more like a Mustard Calvus. The wife doesn't want me to trade him in. Looks like another shopping spree to Home Depot for her!

Pittbull
08-06-2009, 10:35 PM
Let her do the spree Ethan hehehe.. works for my wife.. Thanks buddy..

Hey Austin man the dude i got them from couldn't tell me too much because they belonged to his buddy which wasn't around and i knew they were comps just didnt get the Variant at any rate 7 bucks a piece at this size was a steal bro..

I also bought a small colony of White Calvus 5 total and 6 albino BN pleco's it was a Alto type of ACA for me but at any rate maybe next year bro.. would be cool..

08-09-2009, 12:59 PM
Very nice. Do you think I'd have any problems mixing in regular Brevis with my sunspots? I don't plan to breed them for profit or anything, I just need a colony to keep the male busy.

ibr3ak
08-09-2009, 2:55 PM
Here are some pics of one of the bigger one's I recently got, he just started coming out of the shell (the smaller one is still hiding), close to 2" in size, and some tank shots:

austinpetemo

It's unbelievable how they could jump out of it! Sorry to remind you that; but it is truly amazing.

It is, what's even weirder is that while the male was on the side where the filter is, the female was on the opposite side where there are no openings at all, here's a quick pic of what the opening looks like:

Pittbull
08-10-2009, 12:50 AM
Sorry again ibr3ak but i don't use any hang ons in any of my shellie tanks sponges only with small powerheads.. In a small system they are drawn to the current for some reason..

Hey Afro i would say yes the same fish just different variant.. I kept Sunspots with regulars before worked out fine.. And especially if your not worried about breeding man..

efors
08-10-2009, 12:55 AM
Well ibr3ak, good luck with the brevis now! They are lovely too.

Looking great Pit! What do you feed them?

Razzo
08-10-2009, 4:03 PM
Cool video Pitt and a classy tank. You make me wonder if I should give my shellies their own tank. I know you probably already stated this somewhere; but, how big is that tank and what are you using for substrate: PF sand?

Pittbull
08-11-2009, 1:21 AM
Thanks gang..

Hey Razz that's the real deal on the sand came from Destin Florida off a clean beach powder white sand Gulf side.. its like sugar size grain.. This is a 29gal it sits below my top 29gal on an iron stand is why i had to shoot the video at an angle..

As for the sand i had to sift it to get out small particles of debris.. I found a piece of plastic in it.. No rinsing no boiling or anything just sifting it is all i did and no issues works great and should be a natural buffer.. So when i go to Tampa next year i will bring back another 5gal bucket of sand just in case hehehehe..

All of my shellies have their own tank.. not saying this isn't a bad issue its just my preference..

Hey ibr3ak i feed NLS flake and pellet and Omega one super veggie and a bayleessfishees spirulina pellet.. All of my foods contain garlic and paprika..

Pittbull
08-11-2009, 1:31 AM
Oh BTW the lone brevis Kavala that was in the 120gal is now part of the clan so he fits in and actually he is the leader now hehehe coolness i have had him for some time now and i bet he is stocked for some action.. Just sucks putting him in a smaller setup when he was used to 120gal's..

ibr3ak
08-11-2009, 11:48 PM
Sounds good Pit, and another question :)

Do females usually show the yellow belly? Is that how you can tell the sexes apart without the size differences or breeding behavior?

AfroCichlid
08-12-2009, 4:48 PM
Great video, Pitt. Great looking tank ibr3ak.

I've thought of using local sand before. Have to try it next time I need sand. If I got my sand naturally that would have made my decor 100% free. I love Florida!

Pittbull
08-13-2009, 9:22 PM
Ethan dude thats all i would use just make sure you sift it if i lived in Florida..

ibr3ak not sure on the Kavala i know sunspots would show the yellow but i believe the females are smaller than the males..

08-13-2009, 9:45 PM

Same here hehehe that photo we had made at the ACA at the MFK booth looks like we were holding hands and my wife seen it and she calmed down after i told her to look closer that our hands were close but not holding hehehe jealous wife.. I am out of town right now on a training conference but i will post the photo when i get back home tomorrow and show you hehehe you will trip aye..

lol ooooooh :D

ibr3ak not sure on the Kavala i know sunspots would show the yellow but i believe the females are smaller than the males..

Pit the reason I'm asking is because I just noticed yella bellies on a couple of them (Atlantis stock), while others are lighter in color and have regular white bellies. I can't really go by the size, since pretty much all of them are the same size, just minor size differences. I'll try to take a few pics later.

Also googled up some pics of a pair:

Hey Pitt, got a question for ya' bro. How the Heck do you keep your rock nice and white? Mine turns brown after 3 weeks LOL.

ibr3ak
08-16-2009, 7:18 PM
Brown algae are diatoms presumably from silicates and should go away by itself overtime if undisturbed, although in my case it never went away, I've tried waiting it out (had for over a year), keeping nitrates low, cleaning it with every water change, etc... Nothing worked, until I got myself a bn pleco, the brown crap was gone completely in a matter of days and I've yet to see it.

Pittbull
08-16-2009, 7:25 PM
Amen ibr3ak i have a couple of Albino BristelNose plecos in every tank never an issue and they all have their eyes and they love the brown diatoms hehehe ibr3ak beat me to it..

I too suffered from brown algae for a year with a couple new tanks. Phosphates feed this stuff (controlling them is one key). A BN pleco wasn't an option for me with mature frontosa. Stepping up my mainteance and limiting direct sunlight has made it practcially dissappear. I have heard conflicting results with the BN (glad it worked for you - that's awesome as I share the hatred of brown algae). I did consider Zebra Nerrites snails (probably not a bad way to go).

Can't they end up as frontosa snacks?

Pittbull
08-16-2009, 10:57 PM
I believe they would efors unless they feed their Fronts really well.. And thats not 100%..

efors
08-16-2009, 11:01 PM
That's what I think, Pitt. BTW, have you checked the Razzo's thread of his 1st avatar? I answered a question about your avatar. Check if it is correct , Pitt.

08-16-2009, 11:45 PM

I am not sure, I was gonna try them in my 125 tang tank first. With the price tag on my wc front group, I don't think I would introduce snails to their tank with the risk of infection. Fortunately, the brown algae is not a problem anymore.
