I have a 55 gallon that I bought used on craiglist.
I cleaned it (I thought) completely, set it up, cycled it, added fish, voila.

The only problem is - I apparently didn't clean it very well (I only used salt and water and vinegar)... the person who had the tank before me told me that he used it for cichlids (which I understand leave a sort of residue over time?). I think that is the problem with the tank.

There is some time of spotty reside almost like water spots on the inside of the tank. Except instead of wiping clean like a water spot they are kind of solid and crusted to the tank if that makes sense.

All the fish seem fine, I just wonder if there is something I can use to get rid WITHOUT having to drain and empty everything, ugh. I have seen what looks like a scouring pad with a handle for sale at the fish stores, would that work?

I have a snail in one of my other tanks - would transferring help?

Ideas welcome! Thats what I get for not thoroughly scrubbing I suppose! Doh!:nono:

razor blade is what i use to get green spot algae off of glass should work fine

i use a razorblade to clean any used tanks i buy to.

Cool, I have been wondering how to get rid of the algae spots on my 20g. A wipe with a paper towel doesn't get them at all!

As to the OP, if you have had snails in your tank the egg sacks look a bit like solid water spots on the inside of the tank.

could be a mineral buildup too...what are the params of the tank and out of the tap?

when I setup my 29g I had this white buildup on the air lines for about 2 months...i thought it was something serious but it turned out to just be a calcium buildup

scrubbed it clean and it came back a couple of times...but now it's completely gone and has been gone for about 2 months

I use a scouring pad with a handle to remove green crusted algea.

As someone said above- more likely mineral build up. I don't think Cichlids themselves leave a residue on the tank- but they do require hard water (which will leave a residue... minerals).
