I have a 20 gallon tank and I would like to remove the top rim so I can see my top water fish better. Is this safe to do? If so, how do I do this? Also on a separate question, with a light on legs, how do people keep their fish from jumping out? I saw a glass top, but there didnt seem to be enough room for my emeror 400. Thank you

you might be able to get away with it on a 20g...but i'm no expert

it's usually not recommended to remove the trim in any case but, we'll see what the others think

Why not just lower the water level to see your top-dwelling fish better?

As for the lights and tank-open-ness, most fish don't jump too often.
Neon's don't jump, guppies don't jump.
It all depends on the inhabitants.
If you have fish that jump (hatchet-fish, cories, etc...) then you couldn't open your tank up.

It is not usually recommended that you should take off teh top rim, but if the tank is really good quality you could probably get away with it. There is not really a way to stop fish from jumping out except to have a cover. you could try lowering the water level though.
