When I stack my rocks to make my little reef, should I make a nice pile in the middle of the tank so I have access to the back wall of the tank?

Or: should I stack the rocks against the back wall and maximize the swimming space in front?

It seems like my books show the rocks in the middle, but they're against the back wall at my LFS.

Thanks

Depends on what you like and the habits of the fish. The last rebuild of the reef, we stacked most of the rocks offset to the left, with a small pile on the right. They don't lean on the back, but they are stacked fairly close to the back wall. We let the algae grow on the non-viewing sides of the tank, so maintenance isn't a big deal.

In the FO, we stacked a tall wall that sits about 6 inches from the back of the tank, with lots of overhangs for the lion, rocks pretty close together at the bottom for the eel, and several large tunnels that go all the way through for the trigger.

I don't recommend putting a huge stack dead center--in our silly human fashion, things that are slightly asymetrical look better.
