okay so my dad put a filter in that was given to me already used into my betta tank. my betta is feeling under the weather and i am not sure what to do, i took it out and washed it but now there is stuff floating in his tank. what do i do????!!!!
p.s. if this is in the wrong category, feel free to move it
How long ago was the filter used? What did you wash it with? How long has the tank been set up? Are the water parameters acceptable? There are a bunch of factors here that may or may not be related to the filter, I think. Maybe with more information someone with more experience than I can help you out.
We need to know more about the tank.
What size? How long it's been set up?
What kind of filter is it?
How did you wash it?
What did you remove from the filter? Carbon filter, Biological media, (sponge, ceramic balls, etc. that have the beneficial bacteria on it)
What water conditioner do you use to remove chlorine and chloramines?
What temperature and does the tank have a heater?
What are the parameters: ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph
What kind of testing equipment do you use: Liguid test kit, or strips?
How often do you change his water, and how much each time?
I would do a big water change, with temperature matched water that has been conditioned and make sure his water stays extra clean. No ammonia, no nitrites, nitrates 20 or less.
If the tank isn't cycled then you need to stay on top of the parameters to keep his waterr clean and safe.
if the tank didn't have the issue before the addition of the filter..I would suspect insufficeint cleaning of it and loose bacteria film has broken loose as is often seen in filters that are re-started.
