I'm not sure what type it is, but I've got lots of it. When I set my tank up, the plants I bought had a little bit of green fuzz on them that I didn't think too much about. Now I've got either darkish green or very dark brown to almost black strands of algae growing off everything. The two banana plants that originally had the green fuzz have both died from it and my other plants are starting to be effected too. Any idea what causes it and how I can get rid of it? I've never dealt with this in my other tanks.

Sorry:

five gallon tank
sand and driftwood
two banana plants and an amazon ruffle that have been more or less killed
pygmy chain sword
moneywort
some unidentified plant that came with the pygmy chain sword that is doing quite well actually
I think the compact flourescent is 10 watts
I fertilize sparingly with Nutrafin Plant Gro
I have lots of snails, mainly MTS and a mystery snail I just bought. There are a few bladder snails that I've not eradicated yet.
There are four neons, two dwarf platys and an otto. I have one amano shrimp.

I do 20-30 percent water changes once a week.

The banana plants I bought came with a slight green fuzz on them. I wasn't too worried about it at the time, but I can see the problems now. The pet store I bought them from has a lot of whatever this is in their plant tanks. I thought it may have been moss from the moss balls, but I guess it's something more virulent.

I'm using flourish excel to kill weird algae lower light tanks(brush and hair)

BTW that link is a good starting point for you

Yeah, the algae link seemed to point to a lack of co2. Nobody sells flourish excell around here though. I'll break down and order some here soon.

I've thought about adding a molly or cherry barb, but it's a five gallon tank. With four neons, two dwarf platties, an otto, an amano and numerous snails, it makes adding more fish a shaky proposition.

i wouldnt add fish to cure an algae problem, because once you rid yoruself of algae you now have a fish that has nothing to eat problem.

probably a co2 issue causing it. it might be best to use excel (you can have any store around you order it for you, no real need to order online). or you can start a DIY setup. there are plenty of articles and information about DIY co2 on the forum
