When they mate, the male is on top. Don't go by the rule that says females are generally bigger--my female was much smaller than my male even when full grown. The females also like to come out of the water more often, maybe its some kind of instinct to look for a place to lay eggs, I think. Also, when the snails are on the tank walls, inside the shell is this little flap of skin for the male (a sheath), and hte female doesnt have it.

Male apple snails don't discriminate whom they copulate whether it was a male or female, of different species, etc. Only way to accurately determine their gender is by looking for the penis sheath.

How do you get them to come out like that? When I pick mine up they just stay in the shell.

If you hold them upside down, they'll slowly come out of their shell so that they can try to turn themselves right side up.

oh wait, i got them to come out and i have a little female named Gala and a little male named Macintosh(because they are closely related to cannas)i also have a canna named fuji but he refuses to come out and be sexed.
