Is there a porous container that i can keep the foxtail floating plant in, so that my africans wouldnot eat the plant?

A big porous floating ball would do. Kind of like a giant bio-ball! :)

It envolves both plants and cichlids. It is appropriate to do so. Someone with plants might have the right advise yet not read the cichlid forum! :)

I don't know what to tell ya from keeping your plants from being ate. But I do have a question for you. I have a 55 gallon african tank and plan to get plants. People keep telling me no, but my b/f has a great planted tank with africans and is doing good. I've also seen other tanks online that did well. So....can you tell me a little more about your tank? How are you doing with it? What kind of plants do you keep? Anything I should know? Thanks!

Foxtail, if you're talking about Myriophyllum, is very flimsy. But so would anything with a name like foxtail. Maybe you can try tougher plants. I hear nothing eats Java fern. But I don;'t really know cichlids, maybe they would just tear it apart? Anubias are tough as well, but they grow really slow and are expensive. I think Crinum species are yucky tasting as well, but hard to find unless you order online. You can do some more searches for fishproof plants.

Good luck finding someone who knows all the fish/plant combos that work and are willing to write it all out! Trial and error is probably your best bet after research.
For starters, don't put mollies with anubias (nana). At least in my tank, they were munching on the new leaves (must have been tender!). I moved them to another tank and haven't had any problems in 2 weeks. I tried offering a salad bar to them to deter this behavior but to no avail!

Good luck!
