Fell in love with this little dirty, matted, stained, sad little dog. They found her in a field, and she looked it. I feel in love and brought her home. It took 3 baths, hours of unmatting her fur, and then cutting her hair, nails, and working on her teeth. (Bad shape and covered in plaque) Now she looks great, puffy, white, no more tear stains, My mom names her cookie (all her pets have food names, Beans-cat Noodles-cat etc) She is purebred bichon frise, give her a little time and she will look amazing.....:p:

Breeze, that's just wonderful that you rescued that pretty little girl. My sister had a Bichon and she was the sweetest dog ever. Good on you, girl!!

Did you do that grooming job? She looks great! That's a heck of a good home grooming job. You might want to consider a new career as a pet groomer. The industry needs some genuine talent!

Thanks for adopting a needy dog. She's a cutie.

Thanks! I did the groom at home, I have had to work on her over and over again. I think she will look her best in a few weeks.

Breeze - although I prefer bigger dogs, congrats - what a cute puppy.

My soon to be 6 year old loves going to the Humane Society to see the animals. We make her divide up her allowance each week into 3 envelopes - savings, donation and do-what-she-wants money. Every couple of weeks, she will ask to cash in the donation money to buy toys and supplies for the Humane Society. This turns into an afternoon at the HS, and I always see at least 2-3 dogs that I would love to bring home. And although we already have 2 dogs, she wants either another dog or a rabbit for her birthday.

Are you planning on continuing to groom her? I can recommend some specific tools that will be helpful and steer you away from others that won't work on her coat if you are interested. Just let me know.

I'm interested,

What can you suggest for a Miniature Schnauzer?

Zaffy, do you currently get your dog professionally groomed?

I think you have to weigh the cost of equipment with how likely you are to really use it and groom your own dog.

Buying inexpensive clippers at a department store will frustrate you and probably bother your dog as they often jam up and just lock up in the coat, pulling the dog's hair and causing you to say they are "junk" ....and you'd be right. Most clippers available to the general public in pet stores are junk. They are under-powered to do the job.

A good set of clippers will run you about $100 - $120. This is a clipper with a detachable blade. You'll have available several different sized bladed to pick from and you only really need about 3 of them. They run about $20 each...maybe a little more for the longer clipping ones.

You will need a good slicker brush. Don't bother with a pin brush or a bristle brush, they are wrong for this coat type. A decent one will run you about $8-$10

You will need a good comb. You want a "greyhound" comb....don't ask me why they are called that because greyhounds don't have coat that needs to be "combed" LOL A good comb will be about $12-$20

A nail clipper and some quick stop styptic powder to stop any bleeding if you get a nail too short. About $12 and $5 respectively I am guessing.

You'll need a pair of straight shears. You can spend a whole lot of money on a pair of scissors. This is unnecessary if you are only grooming one pet dog every 4-6 weeks. I saw a nice pair at a beauty supply shop recently that was about $45-50. You can get them for less.

So, if you are willing to spend this sort of money to get decent tools, I can give you specific brand suggestions. You can also get used tools on ebay from folks that thought they wanted to groom their dogs then learned how much real work it can be.
