I have a thin layer of Caribean Sea Argonite in my tank. Would this be a suitable substrate for a DSB, assuming I add more, or do I need to find something finer, like the play sand?

As I understand it Argonite is just fine...although somewhat expensive. You can used play sand as a subsitute which is a lot cheaper. You DSB should be at least 3" deep.

Grain size and depth are critical to the success of a DSB. I went with sugar-fine sand and a depth of 4" minimum - it's working nicely. :)
