We have had a few clutches of apple/mystery snail eggs hatch and we are now over run by snails. Originally we purchased two to keep a Female Beta tank clean and they fell in love. Now we have about 80 snails. We had about 180, I took half back to the store I purchased the original ones from and they put a "free" sign on the tank. A man came and took them all before I left the store. I am almost positive he planned on eating them! What would someone want with 80 or so snails? He also said "Back home we eat those." Anyway, I feel they are overcrowded in the tank I have them in (5gal) and they are growing, not to mention frequent and smelly tank changes - I'm not sure how to get rid of some of them.

Please help

If you get any more egg clutches, freeze or crush them when disposing them. For the rest of the snails, if you have fish that would eat them and they are still pea size or smaller, you could crush them and feed to your fish. You could also give them away here and let them pay for the shipping costs.

Pea size or smaller snails can be frozen just like clutches, in ice water to shock them and then stick them in the freezer. Any snail in fact can be euthanized this way but I only recommend it for babies since their nervous systems are not as well developed and their smaller organs means they will die sooner than adult snails would.

i would feel terrible killing them. id rather feed them to something else cuz than its nature. i dont care about bladder snails but id feel terrible killing a MTS apple snail nerite or a assassin snail. simply because their more of a pet that a pest.
