Hi All,

Reading your blog it seems that I've hit the jackpot on aquarium knowledge, and I need some help.

I've been put in charge of the class aquarium at my son's school. The aquarium looks like a 15 gal, glass, rectangular tank, with a (power filter?) and an under gravel filter (missing the pump and tubes?). I've cleaned out the tank with vinegar and water, scraped off all the calcium deposits and rinsed off thoroughly. I also removed and washed off the gravel thoroughly.

The teacher has requested live plants for the tank this year and medium size fish, as the small ones have died in the past. What I need to know is should I be running these two filtration systems together? If I use the UGF, can I just use it on half of the tank, so that we can grow the plants on the other half? Any suggestions for the types of plants and fish I should put in the tank?

Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to AC! If you measure the tank, there is a conversions tab at the top of the page to show you how many gallons.

A 15 gal tank is a bit small for most anything but small fish.

I would recommend just a HOB filter, no UGF or RUGF.

sand for substrate with the live plants. Start a thread in GFW and post your ideas for more help. Would love to see a build thread on the class project!
