The other day I was in my LFS and was stunned by the sight of a mimic octopus. I'm a freshwater hobbyist, so I'm not too familiar with this animal: would it be wise to start my marine fish keeping with an octopus? Is there any info on this animal, I can't seem to find much. What size tank would I be looking at?

octopuses arnt good starters, they need perfect water and an escape proof tank. and you would want to be sure you know the age of it since they dont live long, the lfs may not be as trustworthy as a reputable aquatics dealer. i would get a tank of suitable size for an octo and start off with a typical saltwater tank, and if your still into getting an octo after you've had some experience than go for it

i'm not a salty, but from what i've read and heard, octopus are rather difficult to keep, and they are total houdini escape artists. i wouldn't start your foray into sw with one of them.

As the others have suggested it is not advisable to have an octopus as your first saltwater venture, secondly the mimic octopus is not well suited to aquarium life, many LFS who get them in have them die within two days of obtaining them, not only do octopi need special care, but the Mimic octopus is the strictest of the strict in housing, and water requirements, and since it is a sand burying species you will not likely see it for the vast majority of time that it is in your care.

Please read here for more information regarding mimics: http://www.thecephalopodpage.org/mimic.php

I remember when we had a blue ring... until some kid picked it up out of it's tank and said "this is cool" Yeah he didn't get bit but we decided never again...ever. Too scary

Octopus will ink your tank if they aren't happy and that could be a day of cleaning your whole tank. But if you don't mind that..
They can also get through the smallest of spaces. Even an inch space.
