My mother would like to get a book on African Cichlids. She knows the fish care basics, since we've both been keeping and breeding more peaceful fish for years. However, she's fascinated by her cichlids and would like information on behavior, and possibly a good way of identifying the more common species. Any "affordable" suggestions?

What type of african cichlids does she keep? Most books will only cover one type(malawi,victoria,tang.).
I have a few good malawi books taht i love reading.
- "Malawi Cichlids in their natural habitat 3rd ed" is a great book. Describes in detail the difference in species, lots of pics too.
-Cichlids and all other fishes of Lake Malawi is a great big book with lots of great photos. This was my first cichlid book. It doesn't describe the different species in much detail but it is still useful. I use it more for picture IDs.(this book is fairly expensive, I think mine ended up being 140$can but i'm not sure as it was a xmas gift)
There are many good books. But for africans they are divided by lake.So we will have to know what lake she wants to help her.

Actually, we have no idea what kind of cichlids they are. Assorted Africans from wal-mart and the local pet stores. I know one of them is a female yellow lab, and that is it. There is one of each species/color. I think they're all/mostly malawi, but I'm not 100% sure.

They are most likely some sort of malawi mbuna if they came from an assorted tank. They could possibly be hybrids(esspecially if bought form a walmart).
I would recommend malawi cichlids in their natural habitat3rd edition as a great begginer book.
