i plan on buying a r/o unit to try and breed south american drwarfs. i know how they work by stripping water down to a molecular level but what i wanna know is it hard to ajust the water for fish to live in it

You will need to put back the "good stuff"... I use a product made be Kent. It's called R/O Right. Follow the directions on the bottle. I've found that using slightly less of this liquid works fine. Some say adding back a small portion of tap water will be sufficient.
Yeah, listen to 125gJoe! I read his posts/profile to figure out what to use for my R/O water. It's no problem at all to add back what you need for your fish/plants, I use some of the same products as he does to do it. The Kent products seem to work for me so far.

I have been using RO water for about 10 years now and only once ever purchased an additive. Never finished the entire container. All I do is mix RO with tap water to get my wanted hardness. I have bred over 25 different species of Apistogramma adjusting the water this way. Of course an electronic TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter is necessary no matter how you adjust the water. They cost about $50.
